Lisa Making, who has been with the Royal Tyrrell Museum since 2007 has been appointed the first female executive director.
Making has worked as the museum’s director of exhibits and communications for the last seven years and brings with her more than two decades of experience in the museum sector.
“I’m thrilled to accept this important position with the Royal Tyrrell Museum, and am looking forward to building on everything we’ve done through the years to ensure the Museum thrives,” said Ms. Making. “No doubt, we have a challenging time ahead of us as we navigate the current global crisis, but I can’t imagine working with a better team to guide us through these challenges. My hope is to continue to strengthen and deepen the Museum’s position as a centre of excellence, inspiring a lifelong passion for science, and fostering a better understanding of our past, so we can learn to be better stewards of our changing planet.”
Ms. Making holds a Bachelor of Arts in History and Physical Anthropology from Memorial University of Newfoundland, and a Master of Arts in Museum Studies from Newcastle University.
She has been a member of the board of directors for the Atlas Coal Mine National Historic Site for over a decade, and currently serves as Chair. She is also a board member of the Alberta Museums Association and a former board member of the International Council of Museums Canada. Prior to coming to the Tyrrell, she contributed to the development and management of a $9 million permanent gallery at the Glenbow Museum in Calgary.
She succeeds Andrew Neuman who retired from the museum in September of last year after 33 years with the Tyrrell.
As executive director, she is responsible for the strategic direction for the management and ongoing operations including maintaining and enhancing the Museum’s position as a world leader, and fostering key stakeholder, community, and educational outreach relationships.
She will also guide and support the Museum’s vital research, tourist attraction, and education roles, and oversee the collection, preservation, and presentation of palaeontological resources and the protection of palaeontological sites in Alberta.
“I am pleased to welcome Ms. Making to her new position,” said Dr. David Link, Assistant Deputy Minister, Heritage Division, Alberta Ministry of Culture, Multiculturalism and Status of Women. “Her proven leadership skills, strong track record at the Royal Tyrrell Museum, and vast knowledge of the heritage and culture sector will continue to greatly benefit our team. The Selection Committee was particularly impressed with Ms. Making’s strategic vision for the future of Canada’s dinosaur museum.”

The Town of Drumheller has temporarily laid off 25 casual and seasonal employees as part of the organization’s response to COVID-19. Like many local businesses and other municipalities, COVID-19 has had a significant impact on Town operations and programs. Due to mandatory facility and program closures, the lay-offs were announced today to employees. CAO Darryl Drohomerski explains, “this decision was not made lightly, but like many of our local businesses are struggling with effects from COVID-19, so are we. We need to be mindful of the impacts on our citizens." “I want to thank everyone for their careful, compassionate and caring response to protect our community from COVID-19. Their dedication to be redeployed to help clean our community is appreciated and we hope they will return soon, once we re-open our facilities and re-start programs,” stated Mayor Colberg. The Town is committed to providing essential services to the community. However, some operational levels of service may be adjusted while staff remain focused on the response to this global pandemic.

Drumheller camping ban rescinded

IMG 7900Following the Thursday, April 30 announcement from the government of Alberta, the Town of Drumheller has rescinded its order to close private campgrounds in the valley.
In keeping with the policy and directive with the Government of Alberta’s Opening Soon relaunch strategy, The Town of Drumheller announced campgrounds may re-open immediately. The order issued on April 23, 2020 is rescinded.
AHS guidelines will be in effect and will be monitored to ensure campgrounds are maintaining appropriate prevention measures.
The thru plan launched last week including barricades placed throughout town to encourage Local Traffic Only, will remain in effect until Stage 1 of the “Opening Soon” strategy is implemented, which is scheduled for May 14, 2020. This does not affect our surrounding residents who work in town and utilize local services. They are considered part of the local community and will continue to be welcomed.
The Director Emergency Management Darwin Durnie explains, “the announcement yesterday from the Province is encouraging. We have transitioned from fighting the pandemic to managing the risk. However, we wish to remind everyone that we are still under a State of Public Health Emergency. Our facilities and attractions remain closed and we are still concerned that an increased number of visitors could increase the spread of COVID-19 to our community and if an injury occurs, it will put stress on our small local health care system. We want to have all available resources for the management of COVID-19. We continue to respond in a careful, compassionate and caring manner and the safety of our community is our first priority.”
Mayor Colberg is hopeful the “Opening Soon” strategy will help the town recover from this devastating pandemic.
“I was pleased to hear the Premier’s announcement yesterday. I’m glad our campgrounds can begin to open and welcome a limited number of visitors. However, the barricades will remain in place as a reminder that we are not out of the woods yet. If we open the barricades and let visitors into town, we run the risk of becoming infected and shutting down completely again. So we will begin to re-open slowly and continue to clean clean clean, and maintain social distancing. Together we can get through this,” she said.
