Village on Diet’s future not deterring health enthusiasts

With the fate uncertain for the second season of CBC’s weight-loss show Village on a Diet, for which Drumheller was in the running to provide the setting, CBC has hinted Drumheller could be featured in their healthy lifestyle campaign Live Right Now.

“It’s connected to Village on a Diet in a lot of ways... and they have encouraged Drumheller to sign up,” said the town’s Director of Community Services Paul Salvatore. “They’re interested in us participating in a challenge with another community in our region.”
Salvatore said they’ve hinted that a film crew may be sent to Drumheller sometime to feature Drumheller for Live Right Now, although nothing definitive has been said.
“We want to continue that message, but if we’re able to put forward something kind of neat or cool they may come down,” said Salvatore. “If they want to sign us up for another season of Village on a Diet we’ll be one of the ones who they will consider again.”
Tara Semchuk has led the group DrumHealthier after news broke Drumheller was vying for a position on the CBC show. The news of no scheduled season of Village on a Diet has not deterred the group from continuing to organize events such as running up the World’s Largest Dinosaur, bringing in health professionals, and organize community exercising events.
“We don’t need a TV show to motivate us at all,” said Semchuk. “It’s still going strong.”
Although the prospect of being on the show started the initiative, participation numbers have continued to grow.
“There’s more motivation now because people are more conscientious of obesity being an issue. They’re more apt to notice things and Village on a Diet helped. People they featured on the show made progress, and it inspired us,” said Semchuk.
Semchuk said upcoming events for DrumHealthier include a boot camp (May 17) and community food kitchen starting in September.
