Those lacing up to play some shinny in Nacmine have been pleasantly surprised to find the new skating rink and shack completed, with a dedication planned for March 5.
“We have kids playing there all the time, it’s getting well used,” says Decore. “We’d like to think this is the nicest outdoor rink in the valley, but that’s our opinion,” he laughs.
Grant funding from the provincial government given to the community association helped pay for construction, with community donations footing the rest of the bill.
The old skate shack was demolished in fall of 2009, with the new shack being built this summer. The old shack was falling apart, says Decore.
“This one was put on a good cement pad, is twice the size, has a furnace and we have room for a change room,” says Decore, adding the rink has been busy over the last couple weeks.
A cement floor of the rink was poured to replace the asphalt from before. New boards, netting, and light standards now sit in place.
“With the asphalt base, it got cracks and weed seeds would heave. We had areas where ice was thick and others with asphalt sticking out of the ground.”
The dedication of the rink will be held on March 5 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., where there will be skating, hot chocolate, and hotdogs for Nacmine residents.
