Rotary supports youth’s interest in film

A young Drumhellerite is exploring her interest in filmmaking by attending a workshop at the Powell River Film Festival, thanks to the Drumheller Rotary Club.

The Rotary Club has been increasing its involvement with youth,  and this year there are about five young people participating in various programs.
St. Anthony’s student Taylor Kluck is going to the Film Festival from February 18-20 to participate in the Adventures in Film camp, which runs as part of the festival. This is an opportunity from young people, ages 15-19, to learn more about filmmaking from industry professionals.
The Rotary Club sponsors youth to attend the camp by offering a subsidy to cover the camp’s fee. In the past, the camp has welcomed participants from all over B.C. but has always been open to participants from other provinces.
During the day, the Adventures in Film participants attend presentations by professional media artists and get hands-on experience learning video and animation production. During the evening, they are able to take-in all the pomp and circumstance of the festival by attending receptions and viewing festival films.
“I thought it was a good program for youth from Drumheller because we have MaxCampus, and we’ve had a lot of film shoots here,” said Tracy Kakuk, youth program director for the Drumheller Rotary.
She said the Rotary has been working to promote its youth programs and did presentations at DVSS and St. Anthony’s about the club’s offerings.
This year it looks like there will be one local student participating in its full exchange, and two in short-term exchanges. Another will be working on parliament hill, thanks to the Rotary Club’s involvement.
