Drumheller’s municipal airport reopened on Friday, December 6 after a temporary closure which limited the facility to emergency use only due to staffing and service level changes.
Services, including fuel sales and indoor amenities in the terminal building, were temporarily suspended, though snow and ice removal of the runway continued as per the Town’s snow removal policy, and both inbound and outbound flights except for emergency services were also suspended.
“As a general aviation airport, the Drumheller Municipal Airport is dedicated to domestic use and does not have regularly scheduled passenger or cargo services,” explains Town communications officer Erica Crocker.
In recent years the airport has undergone significant changes which have included the addition of an automated aviation weather system, renovations to the terminal building to offer more indoor amenities including an arrival and departure lounge and canteen, and a courtesy car available for those arriving by private aircraft.
Ms. Crocker notes the Town is currently working towards establishing a partnership with the Drumheller Flying Club. It is hoped a partnership can be established early next year to allow the airport to “further elevate potential services.”
