The Drumheller RCMP and Rumsey Fire Department members attended a school assembly at Morrin School last week to and formally recognize a student for his courage
Dextin Van Straten is a Grade 3 student at Morrin School. He was honoured for his courageous act of calling 911 in time of emergency.
The award was based on an incident that occurred on September 23rd near Rumsey, AB and involved Dextin, the lone passenger in a vehicle, calling 911 when the driver of the vehicle went into medical distress.
His proper use of 911 including his bravery, composure, and actions, resulted in a swift response by emergency services; he was commended by first responders at the time.
“There is no doubt that the actions of Dextin were instrumental in ensuring medical aid was quickly activated and directed to the emergency. His actions that day may have saved a life,” said Drumheller RCMP Staff Sergeant Robert Harms.
During the presentation, Dextin’s bravery, composure, and confidence was highlighted.
Constable Daniel Clarry of Drumheller RCMP presented Dextin with the “Detachment Commander’s Certificate of Appreciation” and an RCMP Challenge Coin.
The Rumsey Fire Department presented Dextin with a backpack containing various items.
