Carbon Legion Branch 161 hosted a pinewood derby on Saturday, March 11 at the Carbon Community Centre, giving children in the Village of Carbon the opportunity to build their own pinewood race cars and pit them against each other on the track. Event organizer Brian McHugh held a workshop ahead of the race to help participants build their pinewood cars to Boy Scouts of America (BSA) specifications for size, weight, and outline permitted and prohibited materials. While the paint dried on participants’ cars, the group raced Hot Wheels down the track. Second place winner Isabella Brodie eyes up the track with her car “Copper Top” ahead of the races. There were a total of 27 racers, with about 15 children taking part in the event.
