Highway 837 near the Lions Club was reopened late Friday morning after a mudslide closed the road temporarily.
The road, which connects the Bleriot Ferry with Highway 575 has been unstable for years, with debris regularly slumping onto the road. With recent rainfalls, a large slide pushed a cement barrier into the road, blocking traffic flow. Crews were busy late last week moving the material.
“The barrier wall is back in place, and because a large section of the hill fell, it should remain stable for the time being,” said Wayne Wood of Alberta Transportation.
While this has been a recurring problem on the road, Wood says they are still looking for a course of action.
“In the meantime, engineering studies are underway to look at possible long-term solutions along that stretch of highway,” he stated in an email.
