The purchase of a columbarium for Union Cemetery will give Village of Rockyford residents another option for a final resting place following the regular Wednesday, January 12 council meeting.
Residents who wish to inter cremains at the Union Cemetery, located northwest of the village on Range Road 234, would need to purchase a ground plot as there are currently no alternative options available.
“Council approved the purchase of a columbarium which will definitely be a great addition at the cemetery, and provide another option for people,” said Rockyford Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Elaine Macdonald.
A representative from Saint Rita’s Catholic Cemetery in the village had approached administration regarding the purchase; Saint Rita’s Catholic Church has had success selling their own niches and is looking to purchase a second columbarium. There are 32 niches in the columbarium and it was noted the sale of these niches would help offset the expense over time.
Council agreed to purchase the columbarium for Union Cemetery.
