The Salvation Army’s Annual Red Bag Food Drive was another great success coming through for families in need in the community.
The annual food drive, every year brings out the spirit of the community as residents work to fill the shelves of the Salvation Army’s Food Bank, which has been experiencing great need this year. Family Services Coordinator for the Salvation Army Amanda Courtenay is grateful for the support.
“We had more than last year so it was very successful,” Courtenay tells the Mail.
The Salvation Army Church was a hive of activity last Thursday night, November 28 as vehicles streamed into the parking lot and volunteers unloaded the dozens of red bags filled with donations. Inside the church, more volunteers were busy sorting the donations.
Salvation Army Captain Ben Lippers said the donations should fill the very empty shelves of the foodbank and keep it stocked until spring.
The food drive was once again organized by Kim Suntjens and Summer Manca. They are grateful for the community support for donations as well as the great volunteer support on the evening of the food drive.
With the food drive behind them, Courtenay said the season is still busy for the Salvation Army. Right now they are focusing on the Christmas Hampers. The Tree of Toys at Westergard Ford still has tags for families that need to be filled. These will be available until December 6.
The Kettle Campaign is also in full swing. Volunteers are still needed to man the kettles. These are typically about two-hour shifts, and to volunteer, contact the Salvation Army at 403-823-2215.
Other events coming up is the annual ball toss at the Drumheller Dragons home game on December 10, and then the Telus Teddy toss is on December 13. December 21 is the annual Walmart Kettle match day. Donations made to the kettle at the local Walmart will be matched by the store.
