The Drumheller senior Titans wrapped up their season with an emotional loss to the Tier 4 south champions last Saturday.
The Titans were at Cobra Field on November 16 to take on the Willow Creek School in Claresholm in the south final. The Titans played hard, scoring early, but they could not overcome the Cobra’s size and offense and fell 34-7.
“Willow Creek played well, we definitely had some bounces that did not go our favour but I don’t think that would have been enough to overcome their team,” said Ken Fournier.
“The Cobras had a balanced attack, and although the Titans had a plan, it wasn’t enough.
‘We executed our game plan, and we knew if we shut down the run, they would go to the air, we just couldn’t stop the ball in the air.”
This wrapped up a strong season for the Titans who were undefeated until this game. Willow Creek was experienced at this level of play.
“For us, it was the first taste for our squad, it’s a different stage when you get deeper into provincials and a couple guys were caught in the moment,” said Fournier
Despite the loss coach Fournier is happy with the season.
“We had 11 kids at the beginning of the season, so out of the 28 kids we had, 17 of them are new. To have that many new kids in your locker room being able to go for nine wins and almost get to the big game is a testament to how hard these kids worked this year to learn and adapt. Winning nine games in a season is not easy no matter how good your team is. They earned their chance,” said Fournier.
He says they have a strong base for next season with seven graduating, five of them are starters.
“Obviously, there are a few guys on our roster who are going to be tough shoes to fill, but we have a good young group that came up this year. They got a lot of game time in this year,” he said. “It looks like we have the bulk of the team coming back next year and hopefully they got a little taste and that carries over to next season,” said Fournier.
