Flags are at half-mast in Rockyford and Wheatland County to honour a member of the Rockyford Fire Department who passed away suddenly while responding to a call.
The Rockyford Fire Department was called to a two-vehicle collision in a rural area on Saturday afternoon, July 27. John Garvin Junior was one of the attending firefighters on the scene. He passed away suddenly.
“It is a very tragic situation for our community, the fire department and especially the Garvin Family,” said Rockyford Mayor and long-time firefighter Darcy Burke. “For fire departments and volunteer firemen, that is your second family. They are a very close-knit group of people and they always watch out for each other and cover each other’s backs. John was certainly part of our family in Rockyford. It was a tragic loss and I think our firefighters are in shock over the whole situation.”
There has been an outpouring of support for the family and community in this difficult time as the community mourns. Mayor of Strathmore, Pat Fule, sent a letter to the  Mayor and Council of Rockyford.
“We are very grateful for those like John, who sacrifice and give their time to serve and keep our communities safe,” it states. “ The loss of a community member always leaves a deficit in the community, and this is no exception. We offer our empathy, compassion, and support in this difficult time.”
The Village of Rockyford is flying their flags half-mast for seven days to honour Garvin Wheatland County also lowered their flag to half-mast on Monday.  Premier Jason Kenney shared his condolences to the family on social media.
