An apartment block in the Huntington area of Drumheller has been evacuated and Drumheller RCMP are awaiting an explosives disposal team from Edmonton to secure some items discovered while police were executing a search warrant.
At about 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 17, Drumheller RCMP along with an Emergency Response Team executed a search warrant for firearms-related offenses on an apartment on 11th Avenue South East across from Sandstone Lanes.
“Upon the execution, some items were located inside the apartment that caused us sufficient concern to block off the area and we have the RCMP Explosive Disposal Team en route from Edmonton to come and secure the area and look at those items for us and determine if there is something we need to be concerned about,” said Corporal Rachel Pergunas told the Mail at the scene.
Residents of the building have been evacuated to a nearby hotel while the police continue to investigate.
Pergunas said two people are in custody and charges are pending.
“This is an investigation that has been going on for a bit," said Pergunas.
