MH Enterprises has a new program to help people with special needs attain employment.

The agency is running the Opportunities Now. Darci Bertram, job developer for MH Enterprises explains they are working with the federal government to deliver the program.

“We ran a pilot program for it last year, and then we were awarded a two-year contract in October to have it,” explains Bertram.

The pilot was a success and they filled up all their placements within the first six months.

She explains it is a work experience program that is able to reimburse employers for to 20 hours a week at minimum wage for approximately three months.

“The only thing that is a little bit different with this program is it is tailored towards people with disabilities. Anybody that self identifies as having a form of disability can use the program. Whether it is mobility or learning, or mental health,” she said.

There is also money attached for clothing, training, mileage and other expenses as well says Bertram. Those eligible must be age 15 and up, a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, and not currently collecting EI.

She says the program is beneficial for employers and potential employees.

“It works both ways. If employers are looking to get some help training employees or making sure it is a good fit, She said. “We can also use the program if a client comes in and is looking for help, we can put them in the program as well.”

The end goal is to allow a person to attain long-term employment, and Bertram says the pilot was a success.

“Our numbers were really good with the pilot program so we are excited about this one too,” said Bertram.
