Students in Drumheller are gearing up for the Terry Fox School Run to raise funds and awareness for cancer and cancer research.
Greentree School will once again participate in the annual Run on September 28. Grade 2 teacher Jacquie Kolm says the school has set a goal to raise $2,000.
Traditionally the Grade 2 Class at Greentree School has been strong supporters of the Terry Fox Run and these students will be out with pledge forms collecting donations for the run.
The school is also undertaking its Toonie for Terry campaign and for the week of September 24-28 students will be asked to bring a toonie donation for cancer research. Kolm says cancer has affected many of the students.
“They have grandparents, uncles, and aunts affected by cancer,” said Kolm. “We have booklets we are working on in health class and knowing that Terry didn’t complete the mission, that he gave it his best and that is why we try to commemorate this on an annual basis.”
St. Anthony’s School remains a strong supporter of the Terry Fox Run. Over the last 14 years, the school has raised $117,592.76 for cancer research in Terry’s name.
“The good thing about the Terry Fox run is that it has a good reputation,” said run coordinator at St. Anthony’s Gavin Makse. “There are so many other organizations out there that are skeptical, you question how much of a donation will actually go to this cause. For the Terry Fox Foundation, 82 cents of every dollar goes to cancer research. It is another thing that makes you proud as a Canadian.”
Last year, St. Anthony’s was the 13th highest fundraising school out of over 1,400 schools from Alberta, Nunavut, and the Northwest Territories. This year its goal is to raise $7,500 for cancer research.
The whole school will be participating in the walk and run on Thursday, September 27. The day will begin with an assembly at 10 a.m. followed by the walk.
Greentree School students will participate in the walk starting at 1:15 p.m. on Friday, September 28.
