A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued at 12:21 p.m. on Tuesday July 21.
Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms this afternoon and this evening across portions of Alberta. The main threats will be hail to the size of golf balls, damaging wind gusts in excess of 100 km/h and heavy rainfalls in excess of 50 mm. A low pressure system in southern Alberta will focus the development of thunderstorms this afternoon and this evening, and these thunderstorms will have the potential to become severe. Thunderstorms will move into Saskatchewan this evening. Fast moving water across a road can sweep a vehicle away. Very large hail can damage property, break windows, dent vehicles and cause serious injury. Very strong wind gusts can damage buildings, down trees and blow large vehicles off the road. Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes. Be prepared for severe weather. Take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches. Stay indoors when a thunderstorm strikes. There isn't a place outside that is safe during a thunderstorm. Environment Canada meteorologists will update alerts as required.
