Breaking: RCMP Emergency team on scene of standoff, one taken into custody

Updated 11:17 a.m. Police have begun to remove road blocks in Bankview area. One person was taken into custody.

An RCMP emergency response team is on scene in what appears to be a standoff at a unit of a fourplex on 4th Street near the intersection of  7th Avenue Southwest.

Responders gathered early Saturday morning in the Bankview area. This included local RCMP, as well as an RCMP emergency response team armed with shotguns, assault rifles and an armored vehicle. Roads surrounding the unit in question were closed to traffic.

While details are unclear, a neighbour told The Mail he saw police organizing at about 7 a.m. Shortly thereafter neighboring houses to the fourplex were evacuated.

Shortly after 9 a.m. police moved in and surrounded the residence. The father of two believed to be in the unit arrived on scene and spoke with police, and said he could “Talk them out.”   Police set off a flash grenade and called for the occupants to come out of the home.

As of 10:45 a.m., police are still surrounding the home. A second flash grenade has been set and a canine unit has arrived on scene.

Shortly after 11 a.m., one person was removed in handcuffs.

More details to come.
