Sometimes it’s not enough to simply have good intentions.
Brian Dedels appeared in the Drumheller Provincial Courthouse on charges of possession of a weapon and mischief stemming from an incident on June 12 of this year.
Dedels plead guilty to the charges. Prosecutor Ron Pedersen then read an agreed statement of facts to the court.
On the evening of June 12, Dedels was at his mother’s house. The two had been drinking and the two got into a disagreement about Dedel’s mother driving.
In a case of the best of intentions going too far, Dedels grabbed a kitchen knife and proceeded to slash the tires of both his and his mother’s vehicles.
Dedels then spoke to the court and explained how he didn’t want his mother to drive as she was impaired. Dedels went on to explain he had paid for new tires for his mother and himself. He also said following the event he has since stopped drinking.
Dedels, as his mother’s primary caregiver, was also eager to resume contact. The two had not spoken directly since the incident.
Judge Grieve praised Dedels in his efforts to stop drinking and make restitution without being compelled by the court. Judge Grieve also applauded Dedels commitment to stop his mother from driving whilst impaired, but encouraged Dedels to think a bit more carefully next time and suggested taking the keys away.
In light of Dedels making restitution, seeking help to stop drinking, and good intentions, Dedels was sentenced to one day for the charges, with his appearance in court counting as his time served.
