Tragic Saturday on Highway 21

A female motorcyclist was killed and four others were sent to hospital following a series of two accidents on a tragic Saturday, August 4 on Highway 21 near Three Hills.

Shortly after noon on Saturday, Three Hills RCMP, as well as Three Hills Fire Department and Three Hills EMS were dispatched to a three vehicle collision on Highway 21, four kilometres south of the town.

Police learned a southbound truck and trailer was waiting for a second vehicle to turn left off the highway into the Braconnier Reservoir Campground. A southbound Jeep rear-ended the trailer and flipped into the northbound lane and the path of a female motorcyclist.

The motorcyclist passed away in transit to Calgary via STARS. The male driver of the truck received minor injuries. The female driver of the Jeep received serious injuries and as of Saturday was being treated in a Red Deer hospital.

This was the second accident to happen on Highway 21 on Saturday. At 3:30 a.m.  RCMP were dispatched to a single vehicle rollover about 14 kilometres south of Three Hills.

A Ford Fusion driven by a 19 year old male left the road on the west side of the highway and rolled multiple times. The driver was airlifted by STARS to Calgary for treatment.

Police say the investigation is ongoing and criminal charges are anticipated. Alcohol and speed are suspected as factors.
