Russell brothers hitting Stampede stage

Alex and Matt Russell, who grew up in Drumheller, will be dazzling crowds and judges at the 32nd annual Calgary Stampede Talent Search.

Being the third time in the contest for the brothers, having made it in the top 10 out of 400 contestents the two years prior, they have their eyes set on the prize this year.

“We have made it to finals twice before, in 2010 and 2011. We’re just so happy to make it, and maybe this will be our year,” said Alex Russell.

The duo have been writing music together since they were 12 and 13 years old, and had a small rock band going called the Water Boys. Soon after, they realized their knack for harmonizing with each other, and their music evolved into what they describe as “folky and accoustic” sounding.

“We have been compared to the likes of the Jonas Brothers, and we’re really about focusing on the harmony and accoustic sound,” said Alex.

Hearing about the Talent Search through family and friends, the Russell Brothers decided to give it a shot.

“It’s always a great experience, and it’s exciting to participate in the Centennial year because it’s probably going to be larger than previous years,” said Alex.

“The whole atmosphere of Stampede is amazing,” said Matt.

The pair will be taking part in the very same contest, that back in ‘92, Canadian country music artist Paul Brandt took home first place.

“It’s overwhelming at times. It’s like ‘if Paul Brandt made it, so can we,’” said Alex.

Currently, the brothers live in Calgary. Alex is a licensed private pilot, and is building hours towards becoming a commercial pilot. Matt is obtaining his engineering degree at the University of Calgary. However, no matter how busy they get, music has always been a part of their lives.

“I’m just so honoured. It’s really a privelege to make it and to play our music. We’re ready to show Calgary what we have to offer,” said Alex.

The duo, choosing to focus more on harmonizing and vocals this year, are singing a song by the Canadian Tenors called I only know how to love. Matt will be playing the piano and providing harmony for Alex who will be on lead vocals.

Preliminaries started on July 6, in the Boyce Theatre at Stampede Park at 6:30 p.m. Finals will be held on July 14, same time and location.

“If we win, I think I would honestly just break down and cry,” said Alex.
