Laptop, television thief sentenced to four and half months

A man will be facing the next four and half months behind bars after pleading guilty to three separate property related offenses that occurred in the span of 22 days.

Bradley Vandenberg appeared in provincial court in Drumheller on Friday, June 15. He pleaded guilty to possession of stolen property and three counts of theft under $5,000.

The first event happened on May 8 of this year when Vandenberg stole a laptop from The Source in Drumheller.  Employees did not initially witness the theft, however after they noticed the computer missing they reviewed security footage and observed the crime.

Vandenberg was identified, arrested, charged and released on an undertaking.

On May 23 Vandenberg attended to Extra Foods in Drumheller and attempted to steal a television. He was again arrested and charged. He was also banned from Extra Foods.

That didn’t stop him on May 30 when he again attended to the store and attempted to steal another television. This time he tried to flee on a stolen bicycle.

Defense told the court Vandenberg is dealing with addiction issues. He has spent 17 days in custody awaiting his court appearance, and he plans to leave the jurisdiction once released.

Vandenberg was sentenced to 30 days for the theft of the laptop, taking in account the 17 days of pretrial custody, leaving 13 days to serve. He also received two months for each of the Extra Foods thefts and related charges, for a total of four months, 13 days. He was also put on probation for a period of two years.
