Secrets of an avid garage saler

With summer just around the corner, garage sale season has started up in the valley and surrounding area.

Darlene Shannon has been garage saling for over 25 years. Here are some of her tips and tricks to scoring at garage sales:

“I highlight all the garage sale ads in the paper. I colour code them for each area, then I can map out my best route,” said Shannon.

She also said she highlights sales starting on Friday, so she can get there on the opening day and have the best selection.

Shannon also suggested that arriving early will increase your chances of finding something interesting.

“The worst thing I ever lost out on at a garage sale was an antique chair,” said Shannon.

She said that while she was sitting in the chair, another customer had went and paid for the item.

"If you really like something, you get it. Don’t be looking around,” said Shannon.

She said she doesn’t ever bring her big purse. That way her hands are free to browse the sale items. Shannon said she bought a small cross-body purse at a garage sale, which she carries with her during her trips.

“I also try to bring lots of change because they only have so much change at the sales,” said Shannon.

She suggested  wearing comfortable clothes, because you may be out there for a few hours.

“Bringing your own bags is something to remember, you may need them,” said Shannon.

Garage sales can be a nice way to spend a day, finding knick-knacks and treasures.

“I like to go for fun now and find things for family and friends,” said Shannon.
