A spectacular fire in downtown Rockyford razed the former lumberyard building.
Mayor of Rockyford Darcy Burke said the call came in on Saturday, February 25 at about 11:30 p.m. The Rockyford Fire Department responded and received mutual aid from Rosebud, Dalum, Standard and Strathmore Rural fire departments.
“It was a large fire with exposure to adjacent buildings and residential on the back alley side. The fire department wanted to make sure it had enough resources that were needed,” said Burke.
No other buildings were affected and there were no injuries.
“We certainly appreciated the assistance from the neighbouring departments that evening to make sure the fire didn’t spread,” said Burke.
He said the building was owned by a business from Calgary, which was hoping to set up a cabinetry making shop. He said the company had owned the building for about a year and was in the process of moving its equipment in.
The new Rockyford Fire Hall is being constructed beside the building that burned. The Department was storing some of their building materials in the destroyed building. The Village of Rockyford also lost some materials from their village office project in the fire.
