Town secures $2.5m MSI funds

The Town of Drumheller was successful in its application to Municipal Sustainability Initiative (MSI) program and secured the funds it was seeking.

Mayor Terry Yemen presented a letter from Hector Goudreau, Minister of Municipal Affairs, at Council’s Committee meeting on Tuesday, September 6. It indicated that Drumheller had been awarded just over $2.5 million in capital grant funding.
“When you ask for these things they need to certify it is all eligible,” said Mayor Yemen.
Included in the announcement is $225,000 for a backhoe, $1.3 million for Town Hall relocation, $165,000 for a makeup air handling unit at the Drumheller Aquaplex, $360,000 for a new pumper for the Drumheller Fire Department and a half million dollars for the Drumheller Aquaplex slide.
Yemen says they won’t receive the funding for all the endeavours right away, however they will be able to proceed in purchasing a new, much needed fire truck for the department.
“Because we have the blessing, what we do now is some re-engineering to make sure the cost is still relevant before we pull the trigger on it,” said Yemen.
He is happy they received the grant for the new slide at the Aquaplex.
The $1,330,000 is marked the relocation of Town Hall. Yemen said it will be some time before the project goes  forward, and they will reassess the estimate they received from the study completed into relocation last year.
“We will have to look at it again to see what we are getting for our buck,” said Yemen, adding they are committed to the move.
“The building that we are moving into is so much more efficient than the one we are in right now,” said Yemen.
