Dragons take loss against Wolverines at AJHL Showcase Thursday

The Drumheller Dragons were in action Thursday afternoon at the annual Alberta Junior ‘A’ Hockey League (AJHL) Showcase in Camrose against the Whitecourt Wolverines.
The Wolverines opened up the scoring at 5:45 of the first period but the Dragons answered back with a shorthanded goal by Ryan Chynoweth at 8:55 to tie the game.
At 17:09 Levi Wunder scored an unassisted goal to give the Dragons a 2-1 lead. The second period saw a third goal by the Dragons on the power play, Chynoweth’s second of the night, but the Wolverines came back with four unanswered goals to lead the game 5-3 by the end of the second.
The Dragons Chynoweth scored his hat trick goal on the power play at 2:30 of the third period and less than two minutes later the Dragons Wade Wylie tied the game at five each. The Wolverines scored their sixth goal at 14:51 to win the game 6-5
The Dragons now face the Grande Prairie Storm in their second game of the AJHL Showcase on Saturday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. On Friday October 9 the Dragons will head the Fort McMurray to face the Oil Barons at 8 p.m. before heading to Bonnyville to face the Pontiacs on Saturday at 7:30.

Sabres' soccer tourament underway

The St. Anthony’s Sabres Girls Soccer team is in action this morning in their invitational tournament.

The Sabres have invited Strathmore, Olds and Notre Dame to their sixth annual tournament.

The action began at 9 a.m. versus Strathmore. At noon they hit the field versus Olds and at 3 p.m., will wrap up versus Notre Dame.

Junior A Dynos boys basketball winding down regular season

The DVSS Junior A Boys Dynos had a fast-paced and close game with Three Hills last week, with the Dynos only a few points shy of capturing the game. The Dynos last regular season game is at home February 26.

   Junior A Boys Dynos Basketball is getting close to the end of their regular season.
   The team’s last regular season game will be February 26 versus Prairie Christian Academy.
   For team coach Eric Neuman, it’s been a rewarding season.
   Neuman has been coaching in the Spring Basketball League for DVSS about 6 years now, plus he took related courses for coaching in university, but this is his first year coaching Junior A Boys basketball.
   “It’s going pretty good. I mean, we’ve had our ups and downs, but they’ve played really well. And right now, We’re competing for second and third place in our league, with the hopes of playoffs going pretty well.”
   Neuman said the team is also excited to be heading of to zone playoffs at the beginning of March.
   The outcome of the last week of regular league play, in the last week of February, for the Junior Dynos will determine whether they face Three Hills or Linden for play offs. The team played Three Hills last week in a fast paced, close game.
   During their season, the young Dynos have adapted their play to face off with teams that have taller opponents, Neuman said, passing between players, ending with the point guard, who is driving to the basket for the shot.
   “It’s playing give-and-go, when we’re facing off against the bigger guys.”
   The coach says with the Junior Dynos being a smaller team, they don’t have the larger players to fill in the key around the basket.
   Neuman explains this means his team plays the aims to be more of a perimeter team, trying to make three-point shots when they can.
   Neuman said he’s enjoyed working with such a great group of guys, the team has had a couple of great tournaments, but regardless of how well they’ve played, the young players have great senses of humour, and have been a lot of fun for him to be around.
