Dynos take fourth in home tourney

   The Senior Boys DVSS Dynos played well at their home tournament, finishing in fourth place.
   The Dynos hosted eight teams at the 2017 Battle of the Badlands. they included Holy Cross Collegiate of Strathmore, league rival Three Hills, JR Robson of Vermilion, Clear Water Academy of Calgary, Medicine Hat, Rimbey and Acme.
   The team played well out of the gate facing Holy Cross, and began the tournament with a win, 73-69.
   This put them on the championships side of the draw where they faced a tough Three Hills team. They fell 73-47.
   This put them in the third place game to take on Medicine Hat High. It was a competitive game, but Medicine Hat pulled away with a victory. Rimby topped Three Hills to win the tourney.
   “Gabe Gumasing played really well, Evan Flater stepped up big this weekend too. We were looking for him to be more aggressive and he took it upon himself to do that,” said coach James Fournier.
   Despite this, coach Fournier is encouraged by his young team. They so far have a 2-1 league record, and a 4-5 overall record. He says the team is progressing well.
   “We started out slow learning a new system with these kids, but they are picking up what we are laying down,” he said. “They’re buying into the system.”
   The team is young with only two Grade 12 players. This year they have a little more size and skill around the basket. They have adopted a new offense to take advantage of their skill.
   “The future looks good. Our starting lineup is mostly Grade 10 and 11,” said Fournier. “Next year we are hoping to compete for provincials, and if everything goes to plan, the next year should be good for us too.”
   The team is back in action in league play, taking on Prairie Christian Academy on Wednesday.

Hellraisers compete in Medicine Hat

A few of Drumheller’s Hellraisers, the local roller derby team, made the trip to Medicine Hat on Saturday, January 7 to play in an Invitational called Naughty Vs Nice.

   These four scrimmages were games that derby players could sign up for to learn more about the game. The games were either labeled as advanced, intermediate, rookie, or junior, depending on the level the players were at. Teams were called either the nice team or the naughty team to stay in the holiday spirit.
   April De Smet told The Mail, “Eight Hellraisers signed up in a game mixed with other players from all over Canada. We also had one of our own referees, Angelina Vance (aka Sweet Justice) ref two games.”
   January 21 will be the first game of the year for The Hellraisers. They will be back in Medicine Hat to play against the Foxy Rollers.

April Des Smet said, “On Thursday, February 2 from 6-9pm at the Stampede Barn the Hellraisers are doing an open house, skater intake for anyone wanting to join The Badlands Hellraisers Roller Derby League.”

Alumni game tradition for St. Anthony’s

   Basketball players that span the generations came together to play at the St. Anthony’s Sabres Alumni games.
   The seventh annual Senior Sabres Alumni basketball games were on Thursday, December 22. This was an excellent chance for younger players to learn from more experienced players, and also see how sports have a lasting effect on an athlete’s life.
   At 6 p.m., female players from St. Anthony’s playing today took on alumni players from the Senior Girls Sabres teams from previous years. This time the alumni players got the best of the current players.
   After that, the boy's teams took to the court. There was a full slate of players from previous teams taking on the current Sabres’ roster. The alumni players sweated out the win.
   The Alumni Game has become a tradition for the school. It is a chance to catch up with former players and have a little bit of fun on the court.
