DVSS senior girls wrap up season

   The DVSS Senior girls basketball wrapped up a successful season as runner-up in the league final.
   The Dynos played Prairie Christian Academy (PCA) in the league finals on Monday, March 6. PCA has been strong all season and won the championship.
   “They (PCA) are a really good team, I think they will do well at zones,” said coach Andrew Neuman. “It was a 30 point game and we knew we weren’t going to win it, so we made sure everyone played.”
   Leading into Monday night’s game they were coming off a strong tournament win.
   The Dynos’ quest for zones ended a week earlier when they lost the play-in game versus Holy Cross 64-58.
   Coach Neuman liked how the team performed this season.
   “It was a young team but they came on really well. Over the course of the season they developed really well,” he said. “And we had a lot of fun, and we are excited. Most of them will be back next year if they keep playing.”

Junior A Girls Dynos advance to league final

he DVSS Junior A Girls Basketball team is on their way to the league finals.

The Grade 8-9 Dynos have had a strong finish to their season and on Tuesday night, February 28, took the court versus Three Hills in the semifinal game.

Led by 19 points from Gabby Thomson and 10 points from Brooklyn Lutz, the Dynos walked away with a 42-33 win.

The team has been playing strong all season with a tournament win in Three Hills. Last week to prepare for the league playoffs, they squared off against Crowther Memorial of Strathmore and JC Charyk in exhibition play.

They played well but fell to Crowther Memorial 39-28. They then took on a tough JC Charyk and won the close contest with a score of 35-31. This was an improvement as they fell to the Hanna team a couple of weeks earlier 24-20.

The team is back on the court for the league final this coming Tuesday, March 7.

Morrin curlers looking for provincial three-peat

Morrin School continues to dominate the curling world and is heading back to the provincials.
   The girl’s high school team consisting of Shelby Primrose, Kayla Adams, Taylor Olmstead and Amanda Holowath won the 2017 south central zone competition in Chestermere on February 10 and 11. In fact, this is the fifth straight year they have won. This qualified them for provincials where they have won the last two times.
   Coach Betty Primrose explains she has been coaching for five years.
   “On this team that I have now, one has been there for four years, one for two years and one is new,” she said. “They are very dedicated.”
   Primrose says this season they have been training since November and to prepare, they have been competing at a number of U18 spiels.
   “That brought their level of play up amazingly,” she said. “There are not many school spiels anymore so we just go to Calgary and Red Deer where the competitive teams go.”
   Provincials are in Lethbridge starting Thursday, March 2. There are eight teams coming from across the province.
   She feels the team is within reach of a three-peat.
   “Most high school players don’t curl with each other competitively. We are fortunate as we have four curlers from the same school. Many of the school teams that play don’t curl together a lot,” she said.
   She adds the Rumsey Ag Society has been supportive to the team.
   “The Rumsey Ag Society is amazing. I started a junior curling program for grade 4 and up. They go to school in Morrin but take the bus after school to Rumsey and the Ag Society never denies us ice time.”
   After high school, the sky is the limit. Primrose says her daughters have gone to curl at Red Deer College, and her eldest went on to win the national competition.
