The St. Anthony’s Sabres Junior Varsity basketball team hosted a tournament and came home with a bronze medal.
The school hosted the 17th Annual Sabres Invitational tournament on Thursday, January 27. They invited Stettler, Didsbury, and Bashaw.
The Sabres came out strong in their first game versus Stettler, and by half time were within striking distance. The Sabres lost one of their starters, and Stettler pulled ahead for the win.
This put the Sabres on to play Bashaw for third place, and they rose to the occasion, winning 39-37 in a thrilling finish. With just 0.6 seconds St.Anthony’s fouled, sending Bashaw to the line. The player missed the first shot. In an attempt to play the rebound on the second, he shot for the rim. He hit the rim, but was not able to make a play.
Stettler went on to win the championship with a 56-37 result over Didsbury.
The Junior Varsity Sabres have more season ahead in league play.

Drumheller Dragons building for future

Even as the AJHL season continues for the Dragons, they are continually building for the future, signing two new players.
On Thursday, January 28, the Dragons announced they have commitments from defenseman Ryan Henderson and forward Caden Heins.
We are extremely happy to have these two athletes. They have already been in the lineup once, and each of them has shown they can play at this level. I have been watching them all year, and they continue to progress,” said Dragons’ assistant coach Kenton Levesque. “Henderson is a guy you can expect to see on the backend next year, and Heins will be upfront. They both bring a sense of skill, a sense of composure, and they also both like to chip in to the emotional side of the game, which is something that really stood out for us.”
Henderson is 17 and from Lethbridge. He has spent the last two years playing for the U18 Lethbridge Hurricanes. He says he brings solid skating skills and good playmaking decisions.
“I am ecstatic, it has always been a dream of mine to play junior, I’m happy to have an opportunity,” said Henderson.
Heins, 17, hails from Diamond City also spent the last two years in the U18 Hurricanes’ line-up. He says he brings strong shooting skills and the ability to work the boards and break down defenses.
“I came here for a week and got a really good feel for it. Playing junior was ultimately my goal, so it is good to say I finally made it,” said Heins.
Levesque is impressed with what the players bring off the ice.
“Right from the get-go when we saw them play, and in talking to their parents, they share the same values as we do. They prepare relentlessly, no matter what they do, they work extremely hard, and they are both good people surrounded by good families. That is always what we look at when we’re recruiting Dragons, and those guys check all of these boxes in a big way,” said Levesque.

The Dragons earned four out of a possible six points last week, but it was not the way they wanted to with a win and two close losses.
The Dragons were on home ice on Tuesday, January 25, to take on the Blackfalds Bulldogs. The Dragons jumped out, and Ty Whitford scored just 31 seconds into the game. Blackfalds evened it up midway through the second period. At the 11:15 mark of the third period, Ty Daneault scored the winner as the Dragons went on to a 2-1 victory. Eric Ward stopped 27 shots.
On Friday, January 28, the two teams met again, this time in Blackfalds. The Bulldogs scored first, but three quick goals from the drawings from Luke Fennig, Carter Belitski, and Tanner Willick put the Dragons up 3-1. Blackfalds scored two more in the first period, as did Myles Hilman short-handed, as the period ended 4-3 Dragons.
Fennig scored his second of the game midway through the period, but the Bulldogs added one more, as the Dragons led 5-4 going into the third period. Yuhas scored 7:24 into the third, but Blackfalds battled back with two more. Hillman added his second to take the lead with 10 minutes left, but the Bulldogs tied it up, forcing overtime. Just 40 seconds in, Blackfalds took an 8-7 win.
On Saturday, January 29, the Dragons were in Camrose to take on the Kodiaks. The Dragons went on the powerplay early and Hayden Prosofksy capitalized, putting the Dragons up just three minutes in. Camrose bounced back with two quick goals. The Kodiaks outshot the Dragons 14-5 in the second, but it remained scoreless. With four minutes left in the period, Belitski tied it up for the Dragons, forcing overtime. With extra time played out, the game went to a shootout where the Kodiaks connected twice. Kodiaks wins 3-2.
The Dragons are in third place in the AJHL Viterra South, with a dozen games left. On Tuesday night, February 1, they host the Calgary Canucks, and on Friday, February 4, they welcome the Kodiaks to the Dragons Den. On Saturday, February 5, they are back in Blackfalds to play the Bulldogs.
