The St. Anthony’s Sabres girls soccer team were victorious on Friday, winning two games in a row.
    The Sabres hosted the first ever Christ The Redeemer School Division soccer tournament at the Drumheller Soccer Fields.   While a number of schools in the division were severely affected by last spring’s flooding, one, Notre Dame from High River, was able to come the tournament.
    The teams played twice last Friday. In the first game, the Sabres won 10-4. After a short break, they were out on the field again and this time won 8-0.
    “Our girls really played well, they didn’t win the sportsmanship banner, but they were really sportsman-like on both sides. There were no cards, it was fun to watch and be there,” said coach Gavin Makse.
    It was a good year for the team. While, these were their only games this season, they have had the opportunity to play a local adult team as well as parents and teachers.    
    “It was difficult to have expectations. We just wanted to do our best in every game, and throughout the game. They exceeded my expectations, they all played to the best of their ability, and that is what they have done all season,” said Makse.

    Players from DVSS and St. Anthony’s have banded together to get back on the volleyball court this season.
    While it did not appear that either school was going to be able to put a senior high school boys volleyball team on the court this year, a few interested players decided they wanted to play.

    Coach Audrey DeBona said they have been playing for about two weeks. They have nine players, five from DVSS and four from St. Anthony’s.
    “The kids phoned each other and asked if they wanted to play and they said ‘we can fit it in.’ And then they asked me to coach, and I said ‘I can fit it in,” said DeBona. “The first practice we had three, the second practice we had six and the third practice we had nine.”
    The team is already in action. Last weekend they were in Bassano for a tournament and on Tuesday they played Morrin.
    “We went to Bassano and it was a ton of fun, and did they ever progress in a single day,” said DeBona.
    DeBona said they are not playing in a league, but are picking up exhibition play. Because of the combined numbers of both schools to draw upon, they may be in tough when it comes to zones, as they will play at the 3A school population level. In the mean time, the players are learning the game and having fun.
    DeBona said a couple of the players have never actually played, but are picking up the game quickly and doing well.
    “And they are only going to get better,” said DeBona.
