Do or die for Senior Titans

   A season on the gridiron comes to a head this Saturday as they hit the field for their provincial play-in game.
   The postseason begins this Saturday as the Titans take on the Highwood Mustangs in High River.
   Coach Ken Fournier says Highwood plays in a tough league and have strong coaching.
   “They haven’t had a great season this year in terms of scores, but I haven’t seen them play,” he said.
   The Titans are riding a wave of momentum going into the playoffs after beating Forest Lawn of Calgary with a convincing 42-6 win. While the score was lopsided, coach Fournier says it was a battle.
   “They (Forest Lawn) definitely had some guys that could cause a ruckus, they had a running back we couldn’t get a hand on. He was sneaky, there would be a bunch of traffic, and you thought the play was over, and then he would be barreling down the sideline,” said Fournier.
   He said the Titans rose to the occasion. “We played well, we didn’t take a lot of penalties, he said.
   Noah Miles had a great game with two touchdowns, Louis Arida had one and Derek Carriere ran in three.
   “We have been waiting for Derek to get there, he was just coming back from injuries at the beginning of the season, it has taken him a while to get to where we think he could be,” said Fournier.
   The defense also stood tall holding Forest Lawn to just one touchdown.
   “That is the story of our defense this year, every week another guy or two are making the big plays, and this week it was Malcolm Kimmel. He hit the quarterback and caused a fumble which we recovered, and then Mike Peters hit the quarterback and caused a fumble which we also recovered,” said Fournier.
   Coach Fournier says his team is excited for the playoffs coming off the win. “It’s good to have a bit of momentum,” he said.
   Defense is picking up where we had holes earlier in the year, Offense is getting the total package together, special teams are executing at a higher level, so we are getting to where we need to be going down the stretch.”

DVSS volleyball team plays well at PCA tourney

   The DVSS Grade 8/9 girls volleyball team ended a productive weekend with a B Division bronze medal.
   The Dynos travelled to Prairie Christian Academy (PCA) in Three Hills to compete in a 16-team tournament.
   On Friday night, the girls completed pool play and finished 3rd place in their pools missing second place by three points. As a result of finishing 3rd, the DVSS team was placed in the B Division.
   Saturday morning the DVSS team went up against Three Hills, a team they have only taken one set from this year. However, in the quarter-final, DVSS won in two straight sets, putting them up against Arch Bishop Jordan.
   In the first set, the DVSS team continued their momentum and won 25 to 22, however, the momentum would not continue and DVSS lost the next two sets putting them into the 3rd place game against Crowther Memorial from Strathmore.
   In the first set, the DVSS team came out flat and lost. In the second set, after trailing by as much as four points, DVSS came back to win 25 to 23. In the deciding match, DVSS continued with the momentum and won 15 to 9, to take 3rd place in the B Division.

Bantams end season at home

The Bantam Titans left it all on the field as they battled to a close finish versus Lindsay Thurber of Red Deer on Saturday.
   The Bantam’s season wrapped up on their home field in the first round of playoffs, and in the end they fell 24-22.
   “The close ones are a little harder to take,” said Coach Paul Redmond. “We were down 14-0 and we came back. We had a couple chances at the end to win it, but we had a couple mistakes.”
   Coach Redmond was impressed with the advances the team has made this season.
   “Defensively we have been strong. Titans always pride themselves on tough defense,” he said. “At time, the offense was moving the ball pretty good, but a penalty or a mistake bogged down the drives.”
   This playoff loss ends the season for the Bantam Titans. Coach Redmond says the program is moving in the proper direction. They finished their season with a 3-2 record including exhibition.
   “We are competing at Tier 3 and Tier 2 now and doing well,” he said.
     The team’s renewed strength comes from the development program of Drumheller Football.
“The peewee program is getting these kids geared up,” he said. “We don’t have to start at square one, so that is helping us compete at this level.”
We are beginning to gain a little respect in the league.”
