Dragons host successful camp

20170331 Portrait Project WEEK 6 TJH 0173

The Dragons are already building for the future, hosting their first spring camp over the
weekend.
About 110 skaters were invited out for the camp. Head scout for the Dragons Scott Martin, says these are typical numbers for the team.
“It went really well,” said Martin.
He explains this is just the beginning of the process for the team.  From this camp, they have identified the players of interest. In a couple of  weeks, they will be hosting a second camp in Fort Saskatchewan of about the same size. After that they will invite 20 kids to the combine camp in Cochrane from June 2-4.  They will also have the veterans from last season there.
He says they are looking at everything from skill set, skating and competing. On top of that, they are looking for strong character.
“That is number one,” he said, “kids that are just doing things the right way. If you want to be a hockey player you have goals in life to achieve, such as a NCAA Div 1 scholarship.”
He said with a new coach coming on board in a couple months, the roster is wide open.
“Our coach has watched our team a couple times, but when all is said and done, there are 23 spots to be filled come August, and nobody is guaranteed a spot coming back.”

Grade six students at St. Anthony’s hosted the Christ the Redeemer divisional basketball tournament on March 23, 2017.
The tournament invited four schools from the division including Brooks, Oyen, Strathmore, and Drumheller.
The grade six boys competed in Strathmore while the girls remained on home turf.
“It benefits the students to have this tournament at a younger age because it works as a way for them to build their skills and competence in basketball while still having a chance to interact with other grade six students from around our school division,” said Gail Smith, grade six teacher at St. Anthony’s school.
Smith explained that the students had won the sportsmanship banner which will be hung in the school gym later in the year.
“We are optimistic this tournament will happen again in future years as it is a great opportunity for our students,” said Smith.

DVSS senior girls wrap up season

SJ 1

The DVSS Senior girls basketball wrapped up a successful season as runner-up in the league final.
The Dynos played Prairie Christian Academy (PCA) in the league finals on Monday, March 6. PCA has been strong all season and won the championship.
“They (PCA) are a really good team, I think they will do well at zones,” said coach Andrew Neuman. “It was a 30 point game and we knew we weren’t going to win it, so we made sure everyone played.”
Leading into Monday night’s game they were coming off a strong tournament win.
The Dynos’ quest for zones ended a week earlier when they lost the play-in game versus Holy Cross 64-58.
Coach Neuman liked how the team performed this season.
“It was a young team but they came on really well. Over the course of the season they developed really well,” he said. “And we had a lot of fun, and we are excited. Most of them will be back next year if they keep playing.”
