Dinosaur Downs Disc Golf opens

Disc Golf just keeps growing in popularity and now with more venues in the valley. The most recent one celebrated its grand opening on Saturday, October 14. The 18-hole course criss crosses the site at the Drumheller Stampede and Ag Society. This is now the fifth course in the valley for locals and visitors to enjoy the sport, and its popularity continues to grow, making it another attraction to the valley.


Dragons battle through close games

The Dragons faced tough competition from up north last week and fell in three close games.
The Dragons hosted the Fort McMurray Oil Barons on Tuesday, October 10. Despite outshooting the Barons 42-23, Fort McMurray found victory, with a goal in the second period, and then an empty netter to take the 2-0 win.
On Friday, October 13, the Dragons hosted the Grande Prairie Storm. Grande Prairie was the fist to get onto scoreboard at the midway point of the first period, but Connor Poffenroth tied it up 30 seconds later onhte powerplay. The Storm scored again to end the first up 2-1. The second period followed the same pattern. Grande Prairie scored first, but this time Spencer Claerhout answered back. The Storm scored once more to go up 4-2 after two.
The Dragons regrouped in the second period, with Luke McPhee and Adam Raesler scoring to tie the game and force overtime. The Storm dashed their hopes just 33 seconds into the extra period to win 5-4.
On Saturday night, October 14, the Dragons hosted the Lloydminster Bobcats. Again, the Dragons brought the action outshooting Lloydminster 46-27, and Josh Diegel scored his first of the season to put the Dragons up, just 26 seconds into the game. Lloydminster tied it up to end the first period. Jamie Hikida capitalized on a powerplay in the seconds to regain the lead. The Bobcats scored two early in the third to take the lead, but McPhee scored on the powerplay at the midway point to force over time. After a scoreless extra period, the game went to a shootout and Lloydminster scored two to the Dragons one, and went on to a 4-3 victory.
This week, the Dragons are on the road facing Blackfalds on Tuesday, October 17, and then are back-to-back in Brooks on Friday and Saturday, October 20 and 21.

Alberta High School Rodeo Association holds fall wrap up in Stettler

Stettler Rodeo Grounds were filled with spectators as the Alberta High School Rodeo Association (AHSRA) held its junior fall season wrap up over the weekend of October 6 to 8. On Friday evening, October 6, a special fun triathlon event was held following the regular rodeo, which saw contestants rope a calf, run barrels, and tie a goat. Those in attendance on Saturday evening were also treated to a Thanksgiving dinner provided by the Stettler District Agricultural Society. Riata Gammie, a Grade 8 homeschooled student with Prairie Land Public School Division (PLSD), on her horse Bam Bam ran in the barrel racing portion of the event in the large arena.
