Saints win consolation at Trochu tourney

The St. Anthony’s Saints Junior A basketball team are headed to zones after a busy week of play.

The Saints hosted the Morrin Mustangs on Thursday, February 14. This was a league playoff game to determine which team from the area would be eligible for zones. The Saints played hard and won 38-28.

The next day the Saints were on the road to Trochu for an eight-team tournament. St. Anthony’s met the host team in their first game Friday afternoon. Trochu proved to be a fast disciplined squad, and the Saints fell by 10 points, putting them on the consolation side of the draw.

The Saints were up early on Saturday morning to play the Hanna Hawks. With a short bench of only seven players, St. Anthony’s was able to win 41-20, putting them in the consolations final against Berry Creek. The Saints were able to keep their momentum going and won 39-27.

The Saints will be participating in the 1A South Central Zones on March 1 and 2 in Trochu.

Dragons extend streak to five

Drumheller are on a roll after winning their second game against the Calgary Canucks 4-0 shutout on Monday afternoon. The Dragons have only lost one game in February (6-1 on the month so far), and that was to the top Canadian junior team Brooks Bandits on February 2. They’ll be on the road for one against Canmore on Friday, and back in the Den to host the Olds Grizzlies on February 23.

Dragons split weekend games

The Brooks Bandits extended their franchise record winning streak to 22 games with a win over the Dragons on Saturday night at the Memorial Arena, securing themselves a first round bye into the playoffs.

The Bandits, who have been a phenomenon at the junior level across Canada, outshot Drumheller 39-25 and won the game 4-2.

Brooks capitalized on the powerplay in the first period, notching two in the latter half of the period. Dragons’ Brett Edwards answered back early in the second period with a breakaway goal with an assist from Eric Martin. Brooks would score another in the second period making it 3-1. Bradley Stonnell would make it 3-2 in the third on a powerplay goal trying to tie it up, but Drumheller couldn’t even the score and Brooks got an empty netter to finish the game. The Bandits went 2 for 4 on the powerplay and 3 for 4 on the penalty kill.

With the win, the Bandits will receive a first round bye in the 2019 playoffs, with their postseason set to begin in the AJHL South Semifinal, tentatively scheduled to begin March 15.

The loss comes after a big win over the Calgary Canucks on the road on Friday evening, where the Dragons won 6-1 in the Max Bell Centre. The Dragons heavily outshot the Canucks 58-16, with Brett Edwards and Hassan Akl each scoring two, and Shane Ott and Jordan Taupert with the others.
