Tom Zariski will be heading to Japan in a few weeks as head referee for the Toyota World Junior  Cup.

Zariski is on the Alberta Golf Board of Directors and a director on the Alberta Golf Association Foundation and has been an avid official for many years and sits on the Golf Canada Rules Committee. He was given the opportunity to referee internationally at the tournament in Japan  from June 16 to 21.

“It has been going on for some time, I think this is in its 24th year,” said Zarski of the tournament. He was asked to referee about a month ago.

The tournament invites 24 international teams to participate, this is from a field of over 70 who compete for a spot. There are 15 boys teams and nine girls teams.

The course is outside of Nagoya, near Toyota city. It is at Chukyo Golf Club, on the Ishino Course. Zariski will be the head referee.

“It is an interesting position. Golf Canada is called upon by other counties to help out with golf tournaments because it is very highly revered in terms of gold referees in the world,” he explains. ”This is one of the tournaments that have asked Canada to provide a referee.”

As head referee, he is responsible for setting up the rules of the competition, and beforehand he will go to set up the course, such as tee areas and distances. During the competition, he will be in charge of the referee crew.

“It is a very intentional crew. There will literally be referees from all over the world,” he said.

The tournament is held in high regard, and Zariski says many who have played at this competition have gone on to professional careers.

“It is literally a who’s who of golf,” he said.

Zariski will be departing on June 12 for the tournament.

Dinosaur Trail Golf and Country Club is looking at an early start to a great season.

Already crews and volunteers have been busy on the course getting it ready for the coming year.

General manager Greg Morrow says the driving range opened on Monday and they are aiming to have the front 9 open by the end of the week.

“We had two really good days with the guys out on the front 9 with the maintenance crew and volunteers, which was phenomenal, so we have a whole lot of the clean up on the front done,” said Morrow.

“We are banking on opening the back 9 on May 1. That’s quite a bit earlier than last year. We opened the front on April 28 last year, so we’re a little  bit ahead of the game.”

He says they are working on building more partnerships with the community for marketing and promotion. Some of these include stay and play packages with hotels and campgrounds.

“We are changing the face and we are already seeing a lot of traction in the things we are doing with different marketing,” he said.

“We  really want to recreate and redevelop the junior program and we are getting a lot of feedback for that.”

They are hosting their regular slate of tournaments and leagues and are looking at introducing a cash scramble.

“We are taking what has worked and building on that and creating other initiatives, and not always around the gold side of it. We are going to be catering to a couple of big conventions coming this summer,”  said Morrow.

The  Dinosaur Trail Golf and County Club’s annual fundraising dinner and auction is coming on  Saturday, April 13. Morrow says tickets are selling well and are available by contacting the Club House.

The Dinosaur Trail Golf and Country AGM is April 18 at 7 p.m. at the Club House.

Another Dragon is continuing his career at the post-secondary level and is going to a winner.

Jordan Taupert, 20, has committed to join the Grant MacEwan Griffins for the 2019-2020 season.

“Taupert is truly the greatest of all- time in Dragons colors,” states Coach Kevin Hasselberg. “Jordan has maintained consistency as a scoring threat in the Alberta Junior Hockey League year after year. He has developed his game on and off the ice and graduates not only as a statistical leader but also as an inspirational leader to current and future Dragons. Taupert’s jersey is in a better place now than ever and we couldn’t be more excited for Jordan and his future in College hockey.”

Taupert has played three seasons with the Dragons. He is the second all-time leader for the most games played in the AJHL. As a Dragon, he holds the franchise record for most goals scored, at 68, most assists with 121 and most points with 189. He led the Dragons in scoring in all three years he played.

The Griffins play in Alberta College Athletic Conference (ACAC) and have won three straight men’s hockey championships.

Taupert joins 24 AJHL alumni, including the former captain of the Dragons Andrew Kartusch and former player Jacob Schofield, with the Griffins as they embark to defend the title again next season.
