The Drumheller Senior Titans had a busy week, but when the dust cleared they chalked up two victories.

The Titans were on the road Monday evening, September 9, to take on Canmore. Coach Ken Fournier explains there were some logistical issues. Initially, the game was scheduled as a home game, but the lack of referees prompted them to move it to Canmore for Sunday. According to ASAA Regulations, there are not to be no Sunday games, so it moved to Monday.

When they finally managed to step on to the field the Titans eked out a 14-12 win. A win is a win, but Coach Fournier saw areas that could use improvements.

“I wasn’t really happy with how we played. I think we missed a few key opportunities,” said Fournier.

He notes that he had a few novice players on the field, which is great for the team, but their inexperience showed a bit.

“We started the season with 11 guys we knew were returning and we are up to 29. That is a lot of new bodies out there learning to play the game in a hurry,” said Fournier. “It’s great but from a coaching standpoint, it is difficult to get everyone ready to play.”

He said Canmore played well.

“They look young at the running back spot, and their defense played very well and they were extremely mobile,” he said.

This makes the Titans 2-0 in league play after an earlier victory over Olds.

On Friday, September 14 they were in Wetaskiwin for exhibition play versus the Tier 3 team. The Titans had to play a strong game and left the field with a 19-6 win.

“They outsized us in every position, they were big boys,” said Fournier. Our guys played very well. We had a couple of mistakes, but we moved the ball quite well through the air and moved it around the edges, but it was just a really good football game.”

The Titans were able to hold Westaskiwin off the scoreboard until the very last play when Westaskiwin finally scored.

“Defense had a great day out there and again the new guys were contributing getting in on some of the plays,” he said. “When you start seeing a Grade 10 linebacker get sacks in the back fields or tackles for a loss of yards, that’s really good for the future of the season and the program.”

The Titans have a bye week and then they are back on the road. With only two teams in their league, they are arranging exhibition games to help them improve.

“We are expecting good competition in these games. We are exchanging film and not going into these games blind and not expecting what we see from these guys. We want these teams to give us a good look,” said Fournier.

The Bantam Titans are off to a rough start this season, dropping to 0-2 on the season early this season after a tough loss to the Stettler Cougars on Saturday.

The team hosted the Cougars at home in a double header home opener weekend on September 14, with the Terps playing earlier that morning.

Coming off a 14-28 loss against Sylvan Lake to open the season on the road, the team wanted to get a win against the Cougars to kick off their home campaign. But player Luke Miles said the team struggled to get things together.

“It was a tough game and we just couldn’t get it done when we needed it,” said Miles.

The bantams went scoreless, losing 0-32 to Stetttler in a game which saw a Titans player taken off the field by ambulance after a late game hit, causing the team to kneel on the sidelines. Shawn Hems says he and the team will rally around him when they play Calgary next weekend.

“We have faith in our team and after this game we’ll have motivation to play for Terry,” said player Shawn Hems.

Boston Pizza had staff and volunteers at the field selling pizza, raising over $300 for the Titans organization.

Senior Titans

The Senior Titans were on the road Friday night in Wetaskawin, winning 19-6 against a strong Wetaskawin team. The team moves up to fifth in the Football Alberta Tier 4 power ranking with a 3-0 record so far this regular season.

Dragons open season versus Bandits tonight

The season begins Friday for the Drumheller Dragons.
The Dragons’ official home opener is September 13 as they come back to the Dragons den to take on the defending champions the Brooks Bandits. On Saturday night September 14, the Okotoks Oilers come to town.
This comes after a strong preseason where the Dragons notched wins over the Camrose Kodiaks, and the Olds Grizzlys.
They will have their work cut out for them with the Bandits. The team faced off once in the preseason with the bandits stealing a 6-1 victory. Brooks was 2-1 versus the Okotoks Oilers in preseason play.
Coach Kevin Hasselberg says he likes what he is seeing.
“It is a great group of players,” he said. “There is a lot of potential and room to grow as players. We are excited to coach this group.  We are going to go through some tough times and we are going to go through some good times.”
So far he is impressed with the work ethic.
“There are elements we have to develop, you are not going to replace players like Brett Edwards or Bradley Stonnell and Jordan Taupert in one season,” he said. “You are going to have to rely on first-year players to improve, obviously the recruiting class we have coming in we have high expectations for.”
“It is never predictable, all you can do is come in and put in an honest day’s work and I think that is what we like the most about this group. When it is time to work they come prepared to do so and I think we will grow as a team because of it.”
Game time for the home opener, sponsored by TELUS is 7:30 p.m. There is a guaranteed 50/50 pot of $4,000.
Prior to the game,  there will be a tailgate barbecue in support of the Drumheller Sea Cadets from  6-7 p.m.
