AJHL puts pause on season

It will be a little longer until fans will get the chance to see the Dragons on the ice.
Already the Dragons’ season was halted when a member of the Canmore Eagles tested positive, and a couple of days later the AJHL announced the Dragons had a case of COVID -19.
Now the league has pressed pause on the season due to the new Alberta Government restrictions.
“As a result of Provincial restrictions announced on November 24, the AJHL season is on pause until existing limitations are lifted and we are permitted to safely return. The AJHL Board of Governors will reconvene on December 19, 2020 to determine a timeline and updated protocols for return to play,” the league stated on its website.
The Mail reported in last week’s edition there has been cases of COVID-19 discovered on a number of different squads including the Dragons, the Okotoks Oilers, and the Calgary Canucks. After an initial report of a case on the Canmore Eagles announced on November 19, CBC has since reported there are 16 members of the team who have tested positive
The first case in the AJHL was a member of the Whitecourt Wolverines, announced on the league’s Twitter page on November 4.

Senior girls Dynos place third at home tourney

The DVSS Senior girls Dynos were happy to be on the court to play as they hosted a four-team tournament over the weekend.
School sports are very different, especially indoor games, to adhere to COVID-19 protocols. Because of this, there are no spectators, and all physical distancing measures are in place including regular sanitization of the nets and balls as well as scheduled hand sanitization breaks. The tournament includes a cohort of teams from Oyen, Delia, and Consort.
Coach Erica Crocker said the team played well, and they were able to take away a third-place finish.
She said, overall there were some outstanding performances from her players, especially Grade 12 Randi Gill and Kelsey Sharpe. Rookies Piper McCluskey and Ella Schille also did an excellent job.
Next week they play the same cohort group, which will be the final tournament for the Dynos in their short season.

Drumheller Dragons downed by Canmore Eagles

The Dragons stumbled out of the gate of the regular season, falling in two games versus the Canmore Eagles.
The Dragons travelled to Canmore on Friday, November 13. After a scoreless first period, Grayson Dietrich put the Dragons on the scoreboard, but the Eagle’s answered back 10 seconds later. Kasey Hiemstra put the Dragons ahead again, but the Eagles tied it up to end the period.
Canmore scored two more in the first half of the second period, but Luke Finnig drew the Dragons closer with 23 seconds left. It was too little too late as the Eagles won 4-3. Dragons outshot the Eagles 39 -34.
On Saturday, November 14, the Eagles came to the Dragons’ den for the second game of the series. The Dragons outshot the Eagles 13-7 in the first, but the Eagles scored two, to the Dragons’ one, from Dietrich on the powerplay. The Eagles took over in the second period with three straight goals before Hiemstra scored shorthanded with 13 seconds left in the period.
Tyson Gross scored on the powerplay 8:18 into the third, but an empty-net goal from Canmore put it out of reach with a 6-3 win.
This Friday, November 20, the Dragons host the Olds Grizzlys and then on Saturday travel to Olds to complete the weekend series.
