Senior Titans top Wolverines

With another win on Saturday, the Senior Titans have moved up in the Tier IV Alberta rankings and are sitting in second spot.
The Titans were in Canmore to take on the Wolverines in league play. They dominated and walked away with a 37-10 win.
“The positives were we moved the ball through the air, and we moved the ball on the ground,” said Coach Ken Fournier. “We held Canmore to 10 points, they had their touchdown in the first half and that was it.”
Fournier said the game was riddled with penalties, but the Titans were able to adapt. There were a few turnovers and plays called back but the Titans were resilient and would go ahead and cause a turnover, and even blocked a punt and recovered it.”
He said the rookie players were active on the field and were part of some big plays.
“Our defence put in a strong effort which was good to see. Canmore had some good players,” said Fournier. “We went ahead a bit, but they still made some really good plays and it was a pretty good battle.”
He said Matthew Perez had a great game, playing defense for the first time with a blocked punt. Hayden Jones also had a monster game. On offence, Devon Landon and Teagan Watson played stellar games.
He likes how the team is progressing as they head into the second half of the season.
“We have committed to developing our young guys because technically we don’t have any seniors. We didn’t have anybody who played a grade 11 season, so we have six or seven Grade 12s and the rest are rookies,” said Fournier. “We are still learning our team identity and still sorting out who is going to play where, and over the next three weeks we will probably have that solidified.”
This Friday night, the Titans host Olds, a team they have not seen so far in league play. Game time is 6 p.m.

Dragons start season 2-0

After a winning exhibition season, the Dragons jumped right into the regular season and saw some instant success.
The Dragons hosted their home opener versus the Calgary Canucks Friday, September 17, in front of a limited 621 fans.
The Dragons jumped out in the first period with a goal from Grayson Dietrich at the 13:37 mark. Will Christian followed it up a minute and a half later to end the first period up 2-0.
The Dragons kept up the pressure with powerplay goals from Luke Fennig and Tanner Willick. Ty Daneault then found the net for the Dragons to go up 5-0 less than eight minutes into the second period. The Canucks found the net, but Kiano Robinson scored on the powerplay to end the second period with the Dragons up 6-1.
In the third period, the Dragons kept up their scoring ways, with Zach Burns scoring at the 4:42 mark. The Canucks connected again, but Grayson Dietrich scored his second on the powerplay to cap off a Dragons’ 8-2 win.
On Saturday, September 18, the Dragons travelled to Brooks. The Bandits were coming off delivering a 17-0 drubbing to the Blackfalds Bulldogs.
The Dragons wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as Adam Raesler scoring a minute and 15 seconds in.
Christian followed him up on the powerplay to end the first period up 2-0.
The Bandits tied it up after two, but 1:47 into the third period, Kody Willick scored on the powerplay. The Bandits tied it up again, but Christian scored the winner with 6:38 left in the game, making it 4-3.
The Dragons are back in action, looking to build on this strong start on Friday, September 24, when they host the Camrose Kodiaks, and then on Saturday, head to Okotoks to take on the Oilers.

Titans top St. Paul

The Drumheller Senior Titans continued the momentum they began in the preseason to Saturday afternoon, topping St. Paul.
The Titans hosted the St. Paul Lions on their home field on Saturday, September 4. The Titans earned a convincing 28-6 win, however, coach Ken Fournier said the game was a lot closer than the score indicates.
“Offensively, we struggled to move the ball on the ground as effectively as we wanted. St. Paul did a heck of job. They had some big linebackers who could read well, so it was tough to move between the tackles,” he said.
Despite this, the Titans settled into playing their game.
“We were a lot steadier this game. We came out and put together three drives … so we were moving the ball better,” said Coach Fournier. “Offensively we had some big plays, but it was special teams and defence that really won the field position battle for us.”
He said their return team would earn them great field position before the offense even took the field.
“Defence was great. We had one pick-six by Teigan Sattler for 90 yards, and another interception by Ben Messom,” said Fournier. “Defence played well; sacks interceptions, bat downs.”
He says the team improved from their first outing last week.
“We have a long way to go but we improved on our discipline, penalties, and situational awareness,” he said. “We still make mistakes, there is still lots of room for improvement. As the games go on we are starting to cycle the rookies in even more.”
The team’s first league game will be against Strathmore on Friday, September 17 at home.
Before that, they are looking at possibly scheduling an exhibition game.
