Chamber golf tourney swings another year

Golf season is now in full swing, and the Drumheller and District Chamber of Commerce is yet again hosting its tournament fund raiser on Friday, August 6.

Sherri Christensen of the Chamber says this year should be yet another smoothly run event, with many prizes to be won by every single participant.
Over 75 golfers have registered so far, and there are still many spots open for participants to get in on the action.
This year’s aim was decidedly set on raising money for the youth in our community.
Proceeds raised will be given to the Drumheller Gymnastics Club, the East Coulee Playground Association, and the local KidsSport program which aims to get kids who couldn’t normally afford sports to get on the field.
Room is still open on holes for a couple of sponsorships.
This year’s special guests include former Calgary Flames athletic trainer Bearcat Murray, CTV anchor Darrel Janz and Jimmy Hughes, Member of Parliament Kevin Sorenson and MLA Jack Hayden.
Golfers will be treated to a pig roast dinner afterwards. If not swayed by golfing, plates can be bought for the pig dinner.
To register for the tournament, contact Sherri Christensen at the Drumheller and District Chamber of Commerce, (403) 823-8100.

Rosebud athletes heading to Alberta Summer Games

Two more area athletes will be representing Zone 2 at the Alberta Summer Games, and they are sure to make waves.
Austin, 14, and Parker, 12, Knibb, sons of Jason and Diane of the Rosebud area, have both qualified for the swimming events. The two have been Aquadinnies for the last four years, training at the Drumheller Aquaplex. They have also been training five nights a week with the University of Calgary Swim Club.
The brothers are two of eight selected for the Zone 2 squad, and qualified for the team at a meet in Okotoks on June 11.
Both have grueling schedule coming up at the games. Austin will be swimming in 10 events. He will be swimming the shorter distances of 50m and 100m in all four competitive strokes as well as four relay events.
“I’m a sprinter, and my favourite is 50m Freestyle. My best time is 27.46,” said Austin.
Parker will also be in 10 events including short distances as well as the IM and four relay events.
“I’m here to meet new people and make new friends; I’ll swim anything my coach puts me in,” said Parker.
And coaches appear to have great confidence in the pair. Diane says the boys’ coach expects them to do well on a well-rounded team.
“It also gives the boys an opportunity to swim as a team with the same boys that they have been in competition with all year,” said Diane. “Now is the time to see how all the hard work and coaching pays off.”
Before they head to the games on July 19-22 in the Peace Region, the pair will be competing in the Long Course Provincial Championships in Edmonton on July 2-5.
