CBAC swimmers final at meet

Nine members of Drumheller’s local swim club, CBAC, made a splash at the Cascade Sandy Ferris Age Group Challenger, December 9 - 11.
Grady McGougan, 16, competed in seven events and the finales in all events. The highlight for Grady, and the club, was a gold medal he received in the 50 m Breaststroke.
“As a coach, seeing your swimmers get new best times is very fulfilling. Seeing them make finals is a thrill. And seeing them win gold is just plain mind-blowing. We experienced it all at this meet. The whole town should be proud of our team. I sure am,” said Grady’s coach, Morgan Syversten.
Grady also competed in 50m Freestyle, 100m Freestyle, 50m Backstroke, 100m Backstroke, 50m Butterfly, and 200m Individual Medley (IM).
Both Cooper O’Dwyer, 10, and Hayden Peever, 12, competed in 100m Freestyle, 100m Backstroke, and 50m Breaststroke.
Andi Calon, 15, and Marlee McGougan, 13, swam 7 events - 50m Freestyle, 100m Freestyle, 50m Backstroke, 100m Backstroke, 50m Breaststroke, 50m Butterfly, and the 200m IM. Andi finalled in 50m Breaststroke.
Rowan Geissberger, 11, Lalina Ram, 12, Suvera Ram, 10, and Xyza Yap, 11, competed in 4 events - 100m Freestyle, 50m Breaststroke, 100m Backstroke, and 100m Butterfly.
Suvera finaled in the 50m Breaststroke events and finished in 16th place.
“I love to see the look of accomplishment and confidence on my swimmers’ faces after they swim an event. Some of them swam the 50m Butterfly for the first time at this meet. I like to challenge them to get out of their comfort zones and try new events,” commented head coach, Brenda Davies.
CBAC will next be competing in the Puglsey’s Plunge meet in Calgary on January 21, 22.

Dragons hold on to third going into Christmas break

The Dragons are sitting in third place in a highly competitive Viterra South Division after a strong December.
On Wednesday, December 21 the Dragons were in Canmore to take on the Eagles. Canmore came out with more bounce in their step and by the end of the first period were up 3-0. Wil Christian scored less than a minute and a half into the second period, but that was all the Dragons could muster on this night. Canmore scored again in the second and capped it off in the third to win 5-1.
While it is not the best way to head into Christmas break, the Dragons have been playing great hockey through the last couple of months. Leading into Wednesday night’s game the Dragons had handily won three in a row and between November 12 and December 2 went on an eight-game winning streak.
After 36 games, the Dragons are 19-13 with two more losses coming in overtime and two in shoot-outs. They are in third place in the South, just three points behind the Okotoks Oilers and the Brook Bandits who are perennially strong. League-wide they have the sixth-best record.
The Dragons are back in action on Tuesday, January 3 at home to take on the Brooks Bandits.

Drumheller Dragons win three game home stand

The Dragons bounced back defending a home stand with three straight victories.
The Dragons were in front of a hometown crowd on Friday, December 16 to take on the Lloydminster Bobcats.
Lloydminster got the jump off the faceoff and scored just 28 seconds into the game. It didn’t take long for the Dragons to find their legs and Adam Raesler hit the back of the net three minutes later to tie the game. Vann Yuhas scored on the powerplay with eight minutes left in the period, and was followed up by Sam Simard at 16:62. The Dragons led 3-1 after the first period.
The Bobcats made it a little closer in the second with a goal, but Adam Raesler scored his second of the game and ninth of the season at the 4:32 mark of the third period to put it out of reach. The Dragons win 4-2.
On Saturday, December 17, the Dragons hosted the Bonnyville Pontiacs. The Dragons outshot the Pontiacs 10-4 in the first period, but the game remained scoreless until 13:47 of the second period when the Pontiacs took the lead.
The third period was all Dragons as Raesler scored at 8:24 to tie it up. Connor Poffenroth put the Dragons ahead a minute and six seconds later. 29 seconds after that, and with 10 minutes left in the game, Easton Adrian put the Dragons up 3-1 for the win.
On Monday, December 19 the Dragons hosted the Grande Prairie Storm. Adam Raesler continued his stellar play and put the Dragons up one after the first period. The Storm bounced back in the second with two straight goals, but Yuhas tied it up on the powerplay. The Dragons outshot the Storm 10-2 in the final period, and with just 27 seconds left, Cot Pighin scored the winner.

The Dragons round out 2022 on Wednesday, December 21 at the Canmore Recreation Centre taking on the Eagles.
