Dynos out of hunt for league trophy

The DVSS senior boys Dynos basketball team hopes to make it back to the Golden Hills League Championship were dashed by the Acme Redmen Wednesday night.
The Golden Hills League could be one of the toughest in the province. Currently the DVSS Dynos are ranked number one in the province at the 2A level, the Acme Redmen are number one at the 1A level and Prairie Christian Academy (PCA) is ranked fourth in 2A.
It was a dogfight to the end of the season, and the Dynos needed a win to advance. Instead the Redmen won 76-54.
The Dynos trailed by only two baskets after the first quarter, and matched Acme in the second, going into the half with a score of 30-26. The Redmen lit it up in the third quarter and were up 60-40.The Dynos won the fourth quarter 18-16, but it wasn’t enough.
Kyle Smith led the Dynos with 17 points, and Jordon Britton had 12. Brock Boyd had eight boards and two steals.
This season the Redmen came out in first place in the league. They will play PCA for the league championship. The Dynos split with PCA in league play, however PCA had more total points.
While league play is coming to an end, the post season is just beginning.
The Dynos are still top of the 2A provincial standings and will be hosting zones.

Pool players win Western Canada Championship

Two area pool sharks were in the money and took home the Valley National Eight Ball Association (VNCA) Western Canada Championship.
Shawn Bulechowsky, who plays on the local BCA team High Octane, and Shane Best who plays for the River Rats, both play on a team in Calgary called Working Stiffs. The team competed in the tournament in Edmonton over last weekend.
The team played in the advanced division and for their effort won a cash prize of $2,600 and bragging rights.
Bulechowsky said they found themselves in the position where they beat the other team twice. Because there would be a delay, they agreed to play a 10 game set. By the end of the ninth game the Working Stiffs were up by 11 balls, and there was no need to play the tenth.
Last year the team placed 33 out of 800 teams in Las Vegas.
By winning the advanced level in Edmonton they are able to move up to the masters level.
The BCA league in Drumheller continues along with its year-end tournament slated for April 13-15.

Dynos bring home gold from tournament

The girls Dynos basketball team, a combination made up of Drumheller Valley Secondary School and St. Anthony’s School students, came home on Sunday as champions.
The Dynos travelled to Strathmore to participate in another tournament where the most points earned determined the victor, rather than a traditional tournament.
“The girls played really well,” said head coach Ryan Hatch. “They really stepped up.”
Aside from the tournament, the Dynos have had two regular season games. The first was against the Prairie Christian Academy Sabres on February 8, where the girls suffered a defeat in overtime.
The Dynos fell behind early in the game, but with a herculean effort, they managed to battle their way to a tie by the end of the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, the Sabres didn’t let themselves be rattled and took the win in overtime.
A week later, on February 15, the Dynos were back at home facing the first place Acme Redmen.
The Redmen took the lead early into the game, leaving the Dynos to try and catch up.
At the end of the first half, the Dynos were down by a six points, but the Redmen put on heavy pressure in the third quarter and took a 17 point lead.  The Dynos mounted a huge comeback effort and shrunk the lead to nine by the end of the third.
In the fourth, the Redmen renewed their efforts. The Dynos lost the game 64-43.
“They’re the best team in the league and I thought we were right with them. We weren’t outmanned and it wasn’t dominated by them,” said Hatch. “There were some open baskets we missed and there’s some things we can work on.”
The Dynos had some difficulty with interceptions and ball control, which lead to Redmen points.
The performance of Bailey Faubion stood out due to her aggressive play, stealing the ball when she could and driving hard to the Redmen net.
“That came from the tournament, she’s been pushing herself hard, realized that she can drive the ball to the hoop, and opened up opportunities,” said Hatch.
The Dynos get a break next week due to Family Day and Teacher’s Convention. The team will be back in action for their last regular season game on February 27 at home, taking on Three Hills.
“They played a tough team and they’re willing to fight,” said Hatch. “Every night they give it everything, I couldn’t ask for anything more.”
