Dragons extend streak to three wins

The Dragons are sporting an 8-3-1 record after a strong week of topping South Division teams.
The Dragons were in Olds on Wednesday, October 13, to take on the Grizzlys. Olds was up one after the first period, but four minutes into the second, Vann Yuhas tied up the game on the powerplay. Olds jumped out ahead again, but the Dragons evened it up with six minutes left in the second.
In the third period, Kasey Heimstra and Ty Daneault put the Dragons up 4-2. Olds scored at the 16:23 mark to bring it closer, but Luke Fennig scored on the empty net. The Grizzlys answered back with 39 seconds left to make the game 5-4, but another empty netter from Kody Willick with five seconds left put the Dragons up 6-4.
On Friday, October 15, the Dragons were in Okotoks to take on the Oilers.
Sam Simard scored just 16 seconds in and never looked back. He scored again less than two minutes later, and then a minute and 20 seconds later, Yuhas put the Dragons up 3-0 to end the first period.
The Dragons attack continued in the second period as Carter Belitski scored twice within the first 5:35 of the second. The Oilers finally got on the scoreboard with 5:59 left in the second, but that was all they could muster. In the third period, Cyle Clayton added one more as the Dragons went on to a 6-1 win.
On Saturday night, October 16, the Dragons were back on home ice to play the Canmore Eagles. While the Eagles scored first, Yuhas evened it up in the powerplay 12:40 in. Clayton added one 19 seconds later, and then Yuhas scored his second to end the first up 3-1. The Dragons kept the pressure up in the second with Fennig scoring on the powerplay, and then Kiano Robinson added another less than two minutes later. Ty Whitford added one more to go up 6-1. The Eagles added one more with two and half minutes left in the second. Midway through the third period, Grayson Dietrich scored on the powerplay as the Dragons went on to a 7-2 victory.
The Dragons scored 19 goals in three games and earned back the third spot in the Viterra South Division. This Friday, October 22 they host the Fort McMurray Oil Barons and on Saturday, the Drayton Valley Thunder.

Terrapins end league play with win

The Peewee Terrapins finished league play with a convincing win over Lacombe as they head into playoffs.
The Terrapins hosted Lacombe on Saturday afternoon, October 9 at home and led the whole way as they cruised to a 55-6 win. This was a good win after coming off their first defeat of the season.
“We were coming off the first loss of the year, so the whole team, offence, and defence came out aggressive and focused. We had a good lead by half time, and we sort of cruised after that,” said coach Brad Iverson.
“We have three really good running backs that can all score on any given play.”
The Terrapins have been having a strong season and had a chance to go undefeated, but fell to the Red Deer Hornets, who are now sporting an untarnished record.
Because of their successful season, the team received a bye to the semi-final round and will not be playing this coming weekend.
The team will face The Red Deer Steelers in the first round, a team they already beat in their outing.
“We did pretty good against them,” said Coach Iverson.
He says they will be working on cleaning up their game in the coming weeks to prepare for the playoffs.
“We’ll be adding some new plays that will help us be more successful against the Red Deer teams,” said Iverson.

Dragons top Canucks, fall to Oilers

The Drumheller Dragons picked up two of a possible six points last week as they faced the Canucks and then a home and away series with the Oilers.
On Wednesday, October 6, the Dragons were in Calgary to take on the Canucks. Calgary scored first, but the Dragons followed it up quickly with goals from Vann Yuhas, Sam Lozinski, and Myles Hilman. The Canucks scored with less than two minutes left in the first to bring the score to 3-2.
Lozinski scored his second of the game three quarters through the second period on the powerplay. Just eight minutes into the third period, Carter Belitski scored on the powerplay, as the Dragons cruised to a 5-2 win. They outshot the Canucks 45-28.
On Friday, October 8, the Dragons were at home to host the Okotoks Oilers. Despite outshooting the Oilers 28-20, the Dragons could not find the net. The Oilers scored two unassisted goals; one in the first period and one in the second period to go on to a 2-0 win.
On Saturday, October 9, the Dragons headed to Okotoks to complete the series with the Oilers. Scoring continued to elude the squad as the Oilers added one in the first period, and two in the third period for a 3-0 won.
This tough week dropped the Dragons to fourth place in the AJHL Viterra South Division with a 5-3-1 record. This Wednesday, October 13, the Dragons are in Olds to take on the Grizzlys, and on Friday, October 15, are back in Okotoks to play the Oilers. They are on home ice Saturday, October 16, the Dragons host the Canmore Eagles.
The Dragons have a special surprise for Hockey fans. On Monday, October 18, the Dragons will be facing off against Hockey Canada’s National Women’s team in preparation for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing China. Game time is 7:15 p.m.
