The Dragons are working their way back up the ranks of the Vittera South conference after racking four of a possible six points last week.
The Dragons had a slow start to the season, but last week appeared to be hitting their stride when taking on the Blackfalds Bobcats on Tuesday, October 4 at home.
The Dragons outshot the Bobcats 16-4 in the first period and Ty Daneault opened the scoring midway through the period. However, the Bobcats were leading 2-1 after one.
The Bobcats extended the lead by a goal in the second, but Dylan Glinski got the Dragons back in the swing at the midway point, and Vann Yuhas tied the game at 3 to end the second.
Glinski scored his second of the game less than four minutes into the third. Will Christian added another two minutes later, and Daneault scored his second to put the Dragons up 6-3 for the win.
The Dragons were on the road on Friday, October 7, to take on Canmore. The Eagles scored first, but Glinski tied it up early. From there, Canmore went on a run, pumping in five straight goals, despite being grossly outshot. Isaiah Peters scored for the Dragons 2:10 into the third, and Tate Yule added another with a minute and a half left in the game, but they couldn’t keep up to the Eagles’ clip, falling 8-3.
The Dragons had no time to rest as they were back on the ice on Saturday, October 8 to play the Calgary Canucks on the road. Ty Whitford put the Dragons up less than three minutes in, and Noah Danielson added a short-handed goal two and a half minutes later. Calgary rattled one in at the midway point, and the Dragons led 2-1 after one. In the second, Yuhas scored early, followed by Kai Matthew two minutes later, which carried the Dragons to a 5-2 lead after two. Calgary added one in the third, but it was too little too late as Drumheller went on to a 4-2 win.
This week the Dragons are heading north to take on Whitecourt on Thursday, October 13 and then Spruce Grove on Saturday, October 15. They are back on home ice on October 21.

DORVA hosts Central Alberta Motocross Series event

The Drumheller Off-Road Vehicle Associations (DORVA) was roaring the October 1 and 2 weekend as it hosted motocross riders from across the province.
The track hosted a Central Alberta Motocross Series (CAMS) event. Brad Peake of DORVA explains CAMS is a grassroots series.
“It escapes some of the drama of a more formal organization and sanctioning body, just sort of grassroots motocross,” explains Peake.
The track was a hive of activity as they had riders from novice, right up to veteran riders taking to the track. They did practice laps on October 1 and then raced on October 2.
“The Vet events have an A, B and C class. It’s for the fast, used to be fast, and the never was fast,” he chuckles.
He says the CAMS series has grown over the last couple of years by keeping it simple.
“They have a strong following, there’s no sanctioning body or licenses required, no provincial body license required. You don’t have to go and buy an electric transponder for your motorcycle and pay a subscription. They are trying hard to keep the costs down for people and now have the strongest following in the province,” said Peake.
The weather cooperated on the Sunday, making for a great day of racing.

Titans battle Spartans

The Senior Titans have been playing strong football all season however they ran up against Strathmore last Friday, who put them to the test.
The Titans were in Strathmore to take on the Spartans. Strathmore is ranked number seven in Tier III, a higher division than the Titans, and showed their prowess on the field, winning 15-10. Despite this, head coach Ken Fournier saw some bright spots.
“We started out good defensively, we played really well, and got two safeties in the first half. On offence, we were winning the field position battle, all up until the turnover,” said Fournier.
“We answered back and put some nice drives together.”
The team did get some good chances, including a first and goal.
“We didn’t capitalize on that, and I wasn’t too happy about that. That is two weeks in a row where our players have a scoring opportunity, and it doesn’t seem like we have the hunger to get that touchdown,” said Fournier. “That is going to be addressed in the locker room because we can’t have a first and goal and not capitalize. So whether that is guys missing blocks or not getting off the line fast enough, that is something we are going to work on over the next couple of weeks, because we are losing games because guys are not hungry enough to score.”
Despite these mishaps, the game was within reach, and Fournier takes that as a positive.
“In tight games against good teams, every mistake is magnified. If you are not willing to go out inthe key moment like that and make plays, it’s going to be a struggle so we are going to have to be better in the struggles,” he said.
He notes it is also important for the team to play a team that battles you from beginning to end.
“The whole goal of these games and learning from them is to force ourselves to play a broader game,” he said. “We made sure we stuck to our game plan, and we came up short. But we saw a lot of positives and saw a lot of things we can build on.
This coming week the Titans host Carstairs on Friday, October 14 at 7 p.m.
This is Seniors Night, where graduating players will be honoured. After that, Fournier hopes to arrange another exhibition game before the post-season begins.
