The Drumheller Dragons roster is taking shape for the 2013/2014 season after two new players were signed last week.
    On June 14, the Dragons announced the addition of two new players, defenseman Robin Yew and forward Regan Yew. The dynamic duo are also twin brothers.
    The Drumheller Dragons wished to announce the recent signing of Defensemen Robin Yew and Forward Regan Yew.
    “Robin is a very gifted skater and explosive out of the block and, (speaking) as an ex-defenseman, that is crucial.  His vision and work ethic will help him accomplish his goals in hockey,” said Brian Curran, general manager and head coach of the dragons.
    “Regan is a very strong two-way player with good size, great work ethic, and will go to the net. I feel he will be a great asset to our team. His work ethic and determination will help him attain his goals.  The Dragons welcome both boys and I believe the fans will enjoy watching both for years to come.”
    Robin, a 95-born defenseman, was the captain of the AAA Battleford North Stars last year. He played 37 games and earned 2 goals, 14 assists, and had a total of 22 penalty minutes. Robin was selected as MVP for the season.
    “I chose the Drumheller Dragons, because one of my main goals is to excel in hockey and education. I feel confident that Drumheller is the place that is going to help me the best to exceed these goals. I was impressed with the community and the hospitality that we received during our recent couple of visits.  To me it was a no-brainer decision, Drumheller is where I want to be and I’m ready to work hard every day to achieve my goals and to get better every day,” said Robin.
    Regan, a 95-born forward, also played for the Battleford North Stars last season. While there, he racked up 19 goals, 18 assists, and 20 penalty minutes in 44 games. He was selected as MVP for the Mac’s Tournament in December and in the three game playoff series.
    There are a few reasons why I choose the Drumheller Dragons organization. Recently I have been to the community on two separate occasions. On each visit I was impressed with the community, how everybody is friendly. I’m also looking forward to being coached by an ex NHL player and I believe that he will make me a stronger and better hockey player,” said Regan.
    Drumheller hockey fans will be able to see the Dragons on the ice in August during the annual preseason training camp.

    The Drumheller Dragons have hung up their skates on their playoff series and their season after a difficult final game against the Brooks Bandits.
    On Friday, March 22, the Dragons headed to Brooks for game five of their second round playoff series against the Bandits after staving off defeat several nights before with a huge game four win at home. In game four the Dragons were firing all cylinders, but the Bandits came out in full force for game five, winning decisively 7-0.
    The Bandits let loose their onslaught early. By the end of the first period, the score was 5-0 for the Bandits and they added two more by the end of the second. The Dragons and were able to generate  a few scoring opportunities, but couldn’t get past the solid goaltending of Bandits goalie Michael Frederick. The Dragons kept the Bandits scoreless in the third period, but couldn’t make any offensive headway.
    The loss means the Dragons’ season is now over.
    Overall, it was a huge year for the Dragons. The team rose from a lacklustre 2011-12 season, where the team barely squeaked into the playoffs, to a being strong contender throughout the 2012-13 season under the leadership of head coach and general manager Brian Curran, who joined the team in March 2012.
    The season started out slow, but by November, the Dragons were establishing themselves as a team to watch and went on a huge eight game winning streak. At the end of the regular season, they earned a definitive fourth place finish in the AJHL southern division (insert wins, losses, points).
    The Dragons went on to sweep a hard fought series against the Canmore Eagles in the first round of the AJHL playoffs and in their series against the Bandits, won game four, their first win against Canada’s top Junior A team all season.
    Several of the Dragons were also recognized by the league this year. Ryan Bloom, Mitchell Gartner, and Harrison Hendrix were each named Players of the Week. Captain Brennan Baxandall was nominated for league MVP and Gartner for the top defenceman of the year.
    Sadly, Drumheller will be saying goodbye a few Dragons this year. Baxandall, who has played his entire Junior A career with the Dragons, Ryan Aasman, Brad Deagle, Gartner Harrison Hendrix, Brodie Jamieson, and Bryton Mills turned 20-years-old this season and therefore are no longer eligible to play at the Junior level.
    However, despite the loss, there are quite a few Dragons left who have a bright junior career ahead of them.
    Look out for the Dragons to come back next fall, ready for another great season of Junior A hockey action.
