Dragons breaking losing streak

dragons-bw.jpgThe Drumheller Dragons notched another win in Calgary against the “struggling” Royals, following a tie and a win that has ended their rough start coming into the new year.
Out-shooting and out-playing, the Dragons took home a 6-2 win against the Calgary Royals last Wednesday, a team the Dragons traditionally bury with points.
"I thought we played pretty well, obviously playing against  a team that is struggling a bit. We played a puck possession game and used a lot of our speed and skill to create opportunities, and capitalized on that,” head coach Rob Hegberg said about the game with the Royals.
Again in Calgary, on Friday, January 23, the Dragons took on the Canucks. Robbie Nocera, who is playing for the southern All Stars in Calgary on Saturday, opened the scoring a minute into the period, followed by another All Star, Jeff Young, to score unassisted in the first.

Dragons meeting the metal with the pedal

dragons-bw.jpgDrumheller’s Dragons are ready to put the “pedal to the metal” to bring themselves out from under a four game losing streak.
The boys have been playing  good games of hockey according to assistant coach Jason Hegberg, saying that taking losses is “how the game goes.”
On Wednesday, January 14,  the Dragons started a three game road trip in Sherwood Park. The Crusaders shut out the Dragons 4-0.
“We had over 40 shots on net that night, their goaltender played extremely well, ours did as well (Braden Gamble),” Hegberg said. “He only let in four but played really well.
Two days later the Dragons were in Brooks against the Bandits, who are currently holding second in the south.
“We played inconsistently throughout the whole game,” Hegberg said.
“We had the lead in the first period, 2-1, but they came out strong in the second. They came out strong early in the second and took the lead.

Dragons build towards playoffs

dragons-bw.jpg The Drumheller Dragons have been playing good hockey in the new year, but haven’t been able to pull above .500. So far the Dragons are 1-2 in 2009. The team came out swinging with a 3-2 win over the Camrose Kodiaks on the road, but a 2-1 loss at home to the Brooks Bandits and then a 5-2 loss in Okotoks is adding up to a drought in points. “We’ve played nine periods, and I think we’ve played seven that are outstanding, and two that were so-so. For the most part we are happy with how we’ve been playing,” said head coach Rob Hegberg. On January 3, the Dragons outshot the Kodiaks 40-33 in their winning effort. Jeff Young opened the scoring on a powerplay, but the Kodiaks evened the score at one, 13 minutes into the second period. Seconds later Cam Lamoureux put the Dragons back on top. Again Camrose tied up the game, but Kyle Fehr scored the winner with 1:40 left in the game.
