Dragons enter holidays in high spirits

The Dragons headed into the holiday break on a high note. On Thursday, December 22, the Dragons hosted the Calgary Mustangs and prevailed with a score of 7-3.
After a couple tough games earlier in the week, the Dragons came out firing on all cylinders. The Dragons played a fast, hard hitting game and put pressure on the Mustangs.
“We took away their time and space, they made mistakes, and it worked,” said head coach Barry Wolff.
The Dragons got on the scoreboard first from a goal by Brodie Jamieson late in the first period.
In the second period, the Dragons and Mustangs exchanged goals. At the second intermission the Dragons were ahead 4-3.
In the third period Jamieson put the Dragons score out of reach for the Mustangs, scoring three goals, two of which were on the powerplay.
Jamieson had a huge night, scoring five goals. The Vancouver native arrived in Drumheller from the BCHL on December 2, and immediately made his presence known, scoring in his first game. Before the game on December 22, Jamieson had another goal and three assists.
“I was really excited, it was the last game before the break, and it was nice to get a win in. The goals were an added bonus,” said Jamieson. “I’m trying to do everything I can to help the team out. Coach Wolff has been giving me an opportunity to be an impact player.”
“He’s been awesome, he’s a really good hockey player, who can find the back of the net. Last night he was in the right spot at the right time, and with that quick release, five goals, that’s unreal,” said Wolff.
The Dragons, and the rest of the AJHL are taking a break for the holidays. The Dragons will return to action at home on Wednesday, January 4, against the Olds Grizzlies.

Dragons have rollercoaster weekend

The Drumheller Dragons are coming off of a weekend home stand against the Camrose Kodiaks and the Bonneyville Pontiacs.
The Dragons hosted the Kodiaks, who are second in the south division, on Saturday, December 17. The Dragons mauled the Kodiaks, winning 3-1.
The Dragons got the upper hand late in the first period. Mitch Owsley took advantage of a powerplay and scored the Dragons’ first goal of the night. Logan Sceviour put the Dragons two ahead a minute later.
Spencer Samuel brought the Dragons to three goals during a powerplay at 4:19 into the third period. The Pontiacs rallied too late, scoring their only goal at 5:56 into the third, while the Dragons were short handed.
The game was notable for the volume of penalties incurred by both teams. The Dragons got nine powerplay opportunities, and were able to score on two. The Dragons penalty kill was strong, allowing only one goal out of ten short handed situations.
The next day the Dragons were back on the ice, facing off against the northern division Pontiacs.
The Pontiacs were on the warpath early on. The Pontiacs consistently pressured the Dragons throughout the game and kept the Dragons on the defensive. The Pontiacs out shot the Dragons 52-25.
The Pontiacs scored first while the Dragons were short handed. The Pontiacs scored twice more before Justin Cintas scored off a rebound provided by Giovanni Bombini.
At 1:53 into the second period Brodie Jamieson brought the Dragons within striking distance. Afterwards, the Pontiacs went on a rampage, putting five more goals on the board before Mitch Owsley scored the Dragons third and final goal.
The Dragons lost against the Pontiacs 9-3.
“In both games our powerplay was good, so we made some strides there,” said Wolff. “But on Sunday we forgot what made us successful.
Our penalty kill, other than this weekend, has been 100 per cent the past four games, which is huge for us. On Sunday, penalty killing is hard work to out work the opposition, but we didn’t do that.”
The Dragons are back in action today at 7:30 p.m., facing the Okotoks Oilers. The Dragons were victorious in their last meeting with the Oilers on December 2 in Okotoks.
Tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. the Dragons will host the Calgary Mustangs. The Mustangs, as of Monday, have won three consecutive games. The Dragons have been unable to rein the Mustangs so far this season.
“Both teams are beatable,” said Wolff. “If we bring our A-game we’ll have a good chance of winning.”
