Dragons crush Crusaders in northern campaign

The Drumheller Dragons were on the road this past weekend.
On Friday, November 9, the Dragons were in Spruce Grove to face the northern division first place team, the Saints. The Dragons had beat the Saints in a close overtime victory on October 26.
Unfortunately, the Dragons couldn’t repeat and were handed a 4-2 loss.
The game opened on relatively even terms. The Dragons took six shots on net, compared to the Saints seven. It wasn’t until the opening seconds of the second period, that the first goal of the game was scored.
The  Saints were down a man after being called for tripping near the end of the first period. Colton Vanucci took advantage and scored while the Dragons were on a power play 23 seconds into the second period. Mitchell Gartner and goaltender Adam Beukeboom were credited for the assist.
However, the Saints came back and tied the game six minutes later. The two teams would remain deadlocked until the third period when the Saints took the upper hand and scored three unanswered goals within the first seven minutes of the period.
The Dragons fought back, but could only muster one more goal by Tyler Kerner from Cavin Leth with 11 minutes left.
The Dragons remained in the greater Edmonton area for their next game on Sunday against the Sherwood Park Crusaders. The Dragons reversed their fortunes, winning 4-1.
Adam Beukeboom was replaced in net by Christopher Wray. The Dragons haven’t yet settled on who will be their primary goalie for the remainder of the season.
The Dragons got on the scoreboard first with a power play goal from Tanner Kissick off of Ryan Bloom after the Crusaders were called for tripping. The Crusaders would retaliate with a goal of their own a few minutes later.
Tyler Kerner, off of Stephen Doane, scored the Dragons second goal of the night. From there, the Dragons followed up with two more goals in the third period from Dakota Zaharichuk, with help from Tyler Kerner, and another power play goal from Brodie Jamieson, with assistance from Ryan Bloom and Ryan Aasman.
Tempers were high between the two teams. Everything exploded with just over a minute left in the game, resulting in a brawl between Colton Vanucci and Crusaders Eric Liknes. Other players from both sides joined in. The Dragons were called for a team penalty for game misconduct, while Colton Vanucci and Mitchell Gartner were given separate game misconducts. A handful of roughing penalties were handed out.
The games give the Dragons an 8-12-1 record with 17 points. The Dragons are currently four points behind the Olds Grizzlys.
The Dragons return home this Friday and Saturday to face the Calgary Canucks and Grizzlys. Both games start at 7:30 p.m.

Dragons’ winning streak stolen by Bandits

The boards were rocking Wednesday night at the Drumheller Memorial Arena when the Dragons hosted the undefeated Brooks Bandits.
The Dragons attempted to rein-in the Bandits, but lost by a close 2-0.
“We’re trying to get the type of game we need to play. We’re playing against, right now, the best team in Canada. We tried several different things to see how they would work,” said Brian Curran, head coach and general manager of the Dragons. “We had success at times. Our goal was to not allow anything at the crease area, so they wouldn’t have second and third chances on our goaltender. We did a really good job on that.”
The Bandits scored their first goal while the Dragons were short-handed following a slashing penalty called against Tanner Kissick. The second Bandits goal came two minutes into the third from a long shot from the blue line.
“Stone would love to have it [the second goal] back, because he played a great game,” said
Curran.
The Dragons had opportunities of their own, including a breakaway attempt by Mitchell Gartner.
“Against a team like Brooks you have to make the best of every opportunity. We had two chances there that didn’t go our way,” said Curran.
The last time the Dragons met the Bandits, the result was a 9-0 loss. Curran was happier with the Dragons performance on Wednesday night.
“It was a pretty physical game back and forth. I liked a lot of the things we did, but there are a few we have to work on. From that game to this one was night and day. Our approach to the way we play them was different and the fact we had two of our veteran forwards back in the lineup last night who play a physical game...they helped immensely,” said Curran.
The Dragons will be on the road this weekend to face the Spruce Grove Saints tonight and the Sherwood Park Crusaders on Sunday. The Dragons will return home Friday, November 16 to face the Calgary Canucks.

Dragons win four of last five

Dragons continue comeback with victory over Saints

The wins keep coming for the Drumheller Dragons. Now, they are poised to climb the ranks in the AJHL standings after a vital win over the Spruce Grove Saints, their sixth loss of the season.
On Friday night, the Saints came to the Drumheller Memorial Arena in front of a fired up Dragons crowd.
The Dragons, coming off a loss to the Canmore Eagles on October 21, got on track with the aggressive play style they have been honing over the past two weeks. Their efforts paid off with a 4-3 overtime win.
The Saints were the first to get on the scoreboard, sending a shot by Dragons goalie Braden Stone, who was recruited from the Kindersley Klippers of the SJHL on October 3.
The Dragons retaliated halfway through the second period, thanks to Ryan Bloom, who scored his sixth goal of the season unassisted.
The Dragons penalty kill was back on track after their meeting with the Eagles, where they let in four goals while shorthanded.
However, a high sticking penalty to Dragons defenseman Ryan Suchorab cost the Dragons late in the second period. The penalty killing squad had almost killed their third penalty of the evening, when, with only eight seconds left until Suchorab returned to even the teams, the Saints scored.
Just over a minute later, the Saints penetrated the Dragons defense again and scored. By the end of the second period, the Dragons were down 3-1.
The Dragons fought hard to tie things up. Captain, Brennan Baxandall, with help from Christopher Rauckman, sent in the Dragons second goal.
When the final minute of the game came, the Dragons were still down by one goal. However, the Saints had incurred a high sticking penalty, leaving the Dragons with a two man advantage after Stone was pulled from net.
The game could not have come any closer. The Saints desperately attempted to fight off the Dragons onslaught, but with only three seconds left, Mitchell Gartner, from Hunter Mills, sent the tieing goal into the back of the Saints net.
The game went into overtime. Just under two minutes in, Christopher Rauckman, with help from Ryan Aasman, scored the winning goal of the game for the Dragons.
The win gives the Dragons a 6-10-1 record, with 13 points. The Dragons are currently in the last spot of the southern division of the AJHL, but are only two points behind the Olds Grizzlys.

Dragons maul Grizzlys for seventh win of season

The momentum keeps building for the Drumheller Dragons. In the last five games, the Dragons are 4-1 and have moved up the standings with a 5-3 win over the Olds Grizzlys.
In the first period alone the Dragons sent a barrage of shots, 21, at the Grizzlys net. In return, the Dragons only faced three.
The onslaught of offence paid off when captain Brennan Baxandall, off a pass from Joey Ratts, scored the opening goal of the night on a power play.
“They had some pretty strong goaltending. We had enough chances in the first period to put the game away,” said Brian Curran, head coach and general manager of the Dragons.
Baxandall repeated just under two minutes into the second with another power play goal, set up by Brodie Jamieson and Mitchell Gartner.
Mitch Owsley, who was one of the Dragons big point scorers last year, retaliated for the Grizzlys after the Dragons were left a man short after being called for a blow to the head.
Soon after, the Dragons were up a man again, and Stephen Doane, with help from Baxandall and Mitchell Cook, scored the Dragons third goal of the night. The Grizzlys snuck a shot by Dragons goalie Adam Beukeboom seconds later, making it 3-2 at the close of the second period.
The Grizzlys redoubled their efforts, sending a flurry of shots at Beukeboom. However, the Dragons held on and Ryan Bloom, off of Jamieson, sent a message with a short handed goal with just over six minutes left in the game.
The Grizzlys, desperate to tie things up, fought back and brought the score within one with less than a minute left in the game. In a bid to tie it up, the Grizzlys pulled their goalie, but Doane, took advantage and scored on the empty net.
The Dragons will be looking to continue the momentum next Wednesday when they host the undefeated Brooks Bandits at the Drumheller Memorial Arena. The game starts at 7:30 p.m.
“The team is getting their identity and they know the game they have to play to be successful,” said Curran. “They’ve [the Bandits] got a pretty damn good record. We have to make sure we bring our game. I want to see our game against them and we play it to 100 per cent.”
