Alice Corinne Christensen of Hanna passed away peacefully in the afternoon of May 19th, 2019 at the Hanna Health Center at the age of 84 years. Alice was born May 7, 1935 in Dickson, Alberta to Evelyn and Anna Petersen. She was baptized and confirmed in the Dickson Lutheran Church. She grew up with her three sisters Louise, Eunice, Helen and parents as they farmed in Dickson, Alberta. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Norman, four children; David (Sheila), Grant (Linda), Wanda and Duane (Kathy) and eight grandchildren; Krysta, Michael, Trevor, Brittany, Derek, Sean, Alicia and Chad. Alice was predeceased by her parents, Evelyn and Anna Petersen, her three sisters Louise Gregersen, Eunice Nelsen, Helen Thompson and brother-in-law, Ellwood Thompson. As a young adult she worked as a stenographer in Edmonton and Calgary. She treasured her time at Canadian Lutheran Bible Institute in Camrose, Alberta where she attended for one year. In 1956, she met Norman Christensen in Calgary and they were married on November 10, 1957. Norman and Alice lived in Calgary until July 1958 when they moved to Dalum to work for John Holmen. In the spring of 1960, they started farming Norman’s parents farm in Dalum. They farmed in Dalum until 1977 and then moved to Fort St. John, BC where they farmed for just one year. In 1978, they moved to Hanna and continued to farm and became a part of the Scapa and Hanna community. In December, 2000 they moved off the farm and retired in Hanna. Alice was a devoted and loving wife to Norman for sixty-one years. Alice loved her four children, David, Grant, Wanda and Duane dearly and modeled kindness, gentleness, a strong faith, resilience and hard work as they grew up on the various farms. She was an exceptional Mom and cared deeply about each of them. Alice was overjoyed when Sheila, Linda and Kathy joined the family and welcomed her daughter-in-law’s with open arms of love. Alice was a dedicated and active member of the Hanna Redeemer Lutheran Church. She was relentless in her devotion to the Redeemer Lutheran Church Women’s (RLCW) group and spent countless hours making quilts, volunteering and helping out whenever she could. Alice loved the rural life, gardening, baking, sewing, doing handiwork and held leadership roles in both the church and the 4-H sewing club. Family and her faith meant everything to Alice. She adored and treasured each of her eight grandchildren. The funeral service for Alice will be held on May 29, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. at the Hanna

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Peter Abramenko of Rumsey, Alberta on May 6, 2019 at the Foothills Hospital at the age of 85 years. Peter was the 4th child of Flora and Peter Abramenko. Peter was involved in farming at a young age and worked for local farmers in the area for additional sources of income. He
also experienced working in a sawmill, a grain elevator construction worker, an oil rig hand and a bartender in
various hotels in the area. The sudden loss of his father in 1954 devastated the family. With few resources and fewer options, he, his mother and younger brother faced the challenges presented to them and continued to farm
uncertain of the future. In 1962 Peter married the love of his life Darlene Riggs. Sons Mark and Shawn were born in 1964 and 1967 respectively. Peter was happiest on the farm and the joy of spring calves and all the things spring brings. As spring moved into summer it also brought the Rumsey Parade, something that was a highlight to him and his family since they usually were participants. He enjoyed life and was fondly referred to by his sister Mary as Peter Rabbit and lovingly remembered by the rest of Mary’s family as Rabbit. He was the social butterfly of the family and loved to visit and reminisce of times past. Travelling was one of Peter’s passions. He loved the N.W.T. and Alaska, travelling there three times as well as Australia twice with his son Shawn via a motorcycle. He was amazed at what he saw on his trip to Churchill and all of its wonders. He was a deeply caring and giving person. He will be missed beyond measure. Peter will be lovingly remembered by his sons Mark and Shawn (Theresa); grandchildren Crystal, Leteisha, Kayden and Danica and numerous nieces and nephews. Peter was predeceased by his wife Darlene, brothers Nick & Bill, sister Mary and his parents Flora and Peter. Betty Read was born July 2, 1926 at the High River Hospital to Anthony and Catherine Read. In 1928 the family of four including brother Jack Derry, moved to Craigmyle and opened up the Read Hardware store. Betty attended the Craigmyle School for all her schooling. In March of 1944 she had to quit school and run the hardware store as both her parents were in hospital in Hanna and her brother was serving overseas. She had to take one more course, French, the next school term to get enough credits to graduate. While taking this course she worked for Mr. Innes at his grocery store in Craigmyle. Upon getting her credits it was off to Calgary to attend nursing school. She quickly made a lifelong friend, Elsie Hayes, and also discovered nursing wasn’t for her. She soon got a job at the Royal Bank in Calgary. With luck, she was transferred out to the Hanna branch and was back home again. Betty boarded in Hanna while working at the bank. In 1954 she was the first employee from the Hanna branch to be promoted to a supervisor’s position in the Calgary office. Betty was engaged to Ken Rew at this time and her heart kept her in Craigmyle. On July 12, 1954 they were married at All Saints Anglican Church in Hanna. Betty was a town girl and life on the farm would prove interesting but she took it all in her stride. John was born in 1957 and Linda was born in 1960. Her life was spent taking care of her family. She was a member of the Eastern Star for 63 years and was a dedicated member of All Saints Anglican Church. Betty was predeceased by her parents, Anthony and Catherine Read, her brother, Jack Derry and her husband, Ken Rew. She is survived by her two children, John (Joanne) and Linda (Lyle), numerous nephews and nieces and their families and many friends. Funeral Services for Betty will be held Wednesday, May 15, 2019 at 2:00 P.M. at the Craigmyle United Church, with lunch to follow in the church hall. If friends so desire memorial donations may be made to the Craigmyle Historic Society. Courtney-Winter’s Funeral Homes are in care of the arrangements.
