August 7, 1948 - January 31, 2022

On August 7, 1948 at 5:12 p.m., a beautiful freckle-faced little girl with fiery red hair was born to Edward and Lizzie Van De Ryse in Drumheller, Alberta.
She attended the cottage schools in Newcastle and then moved on to the big schools in Drumheller graduating from the then Drumheller Vocational High School.
Outside of school hours she could be found working for Elmer at the Tastee Delight. Then it was off to the University of Calgary for 3 years to fulfill her dream of
being a teacher. She was able to teach kindergarten for 2 years. She was married in 1970 and then subsequently divorced in 1980.
In 1978 she returned to the workforce securing a job with the Canada Employment Agency. Moving through the ranks working in Calgary, Edson and then Kamloops as the office manager.
In 1991, she returned to Drumheller to care for her Mom and to be closer to family. Remembering her days from the Tastee Delight she decided to become her own boss and opened Rainbow Ice Cream that was located on the Dinosaur Trail. Unfortunately, lifestyle changes saw the decrease in demand for ice cream treats and she was forced to close the business. She went on to secure employment with Drumheller Oilfield Services. Changes again happened and she spent a brief period living in Irma, Alberta. Then back to Drumheller where she again went back into the ice cream business selling treats at the Swinging Bridge, then on to 7-11 and finally working for the Drumheller Mail until her retirement at 65.
Doneal loved to crochet and create numerous craft items all her life. She always had the entrepreneur in her blood from a young age. She remembers being the first to volunteer to sell fund raising tickets for school and other groups. Then going on to be a regular at the Farmer’s Market and entering the annual exhibitions winning many awards for her work.
When she retired it became her passion to expand her crafting and crocheting. As well she began collecting items from far and wide to have regular garage sales. She lovingly cleaned and repaired items for resale. She felt that what was someone’s junk became another’s treasure. Not everyone knew her name but if you mentioned the “Garage sale lady” they all knew her.
Doneal is survived by her sister Marie (Richard) Glover and family. Ed (Debbie) Van De Ryse and family. Donna Heller and family. Good friends Glenda Zerebeski, Brenda Delaney and Leslie and Lynee Wilkins.
She was predeceased by her Father, Mother and younger sister Barbara.

Joanne Carolyn

1946 - 2022

Joanne Carolyn Hillman passed away peacefully at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre following a lengthy illness on February 1, 2022, at the age of 75 years. Joanne Llewellyn was born in 1946 in Drumheller, the only daughter and the youngest of the four children of Joe & Carrie Llewellyn. She took her schooling in Drumheller until she entered Nursing Aid training in
Calgary in 1965. She met Gordon Hillman at the Salvation Army Youth Group in Drumheller in 1960. They dated until they were married at the Salvation Army, April 2nd, 1966. They lived several years in Drumheller where their four children were all born. They operated several businesses in Drumheller including Joe’s Delivery Service, Drumheller Distributors and the Bottle Depot & Pop Shoppe. They moved to Red Deer for a few years but returned to Drumheller in 1979 to build and operate Dinny’s Gas N Splash on the site of the old bottle depot building. They sold this business in 1983 and moved again to Red Deer where they have since resided, owning and operating several businesses including Video View & Great Canadian Dollar store and developed many commercial buildings all over Alberta. Joanne & Gordon were very active in the Red Deer Salvation Army. Joanne was predeceased by her sons Trevor in 2009 and Tim in 2019, her parents Joe & Carrie Llewellyn; her brothers Jack (Bernice), Ron (Norma) and Bob Llewellyn.
Joanne leaves to grieve her passing her loving husband Gordon; daughters Tari (Rollie) Gervais and Tracy Hillman; daughter-in-law Sherrie Hillman all of Red Deer; sister-in-law Tilly Llewellyn of Drumheller; brothers & sisters in-law Norm & Betty Hillman of Sherwood Park; John & Evelyn Bolin of Red Deer as well as nine grandchildren, Shannon, Lindsay (Logan) & Megan Gervais, Ashlee & Melissa Hillman, Brittany (Dyllan), Christopher & Matthew Barker and Emily Hillman as well as many nieces & nephews, her church family and so many friends. A celebration of Joanne’s life has been held.
