PRLD eyes Morrin School for modernization

With renovations to JC Charyk School in Hanna complete, and plans to break ground on a new Delia School, Prairie Land Regional School Division (PLRD) has its sights set on Morrin School.
At the February 12  PLRD board meeting a draft of the Morrin School engineering report was discussed. Stephenson Engineering presented information regarding the  Morrin School Structural Condition Assessment and Options analysis report.
“The Board of trustees felt physically the state that structure is in, they would need to put it in their Capital Plan submission, and that would be their number one priority in their capital plan submitted to the ministry,” said Superintendent Cam McKeage.
He said the report once finalized will be sent to the board and McKeage says hopefully it will be approved for submission at their next board meeting.
While the division may identify Morrin school on its three-year capital priority plan, it still has to be looked at by the province.
‘We had the engineering firm give it another look to strengthen our case, recognizing the building is in a little bit of disarray,” he said.
He says at this point they can not say if they are looking at a renovation or a rebuild.
“All we are asking for is recognition the building needs some work,” he said. “In our capital plan we are going to ask for the moon, but it is really up to the ministry what they want to do with it.”
According to a 2011 report, the original Morrin School was built in 1950, with expansions and modernizations in 1957, 1978 and 1988.

Seeing green

Everyone is a little Irish on St. Patrick’s Day. The holiday is a chance to celebrate everything from the Green Isles, including soda bread, stew, boxty and of course green beer. Yavis Restaurant and Prop Room are in the spirit and will be serving the colourful brew all weekend. Tanya Lucey and Amy Jensen are already pulling pints.

Community rallies for families affected by fires

It has been just over a week since an East Bankview neighbourhood was stunned by a fire that destroyed two houses and damaged a third. While this is a tragedy for the families, they are seeing an outpouring of support from the community.
Even before the fire was out members of the community showed their support. Firefighters were grateful for the many businesses that supported them with hot coffee and food while they battled the blaze. Online there was an outpouring of support from members of the community offering shelter for those affected as well as items needed for the families to continue on.
Within a couple of days, GoFundMe Campaigns were launched for Dwayne and Jen Nagy and their twins, and for Sasi Sivam, his wife Harshini, and their son, the families that lost their homes.
There has also been an outpouring of donations of items needed as well as gift and grocery cards. Drumheller’s Boston Pizza and Drumheller Chrysler have stepped up to take these donations on behalf of the families.
There have also been a number of initiatives people have undertaken on their own to support these families. The DVSS student council voted to purchase a $150 Visa gift card for each of the families.
The A&W Restaurant in Drumheller also spearheaded a fundraising campaign and donated $2 from every Mama Burger sold last week to the family. A&W manager Sean Armstrong said they sold 867 Mama Burgers and also collected donations. They raised about $1,800. The restaurant is also adding to the total to present each family $1,000.
