With renovations to JC Charyk School in Hanna complete, and plans to break ground on a new Delia School, Prairie Land Regional School Division (PLRD) has its sights set on Morrin School.
At the February 12 PLRD board meeting a draft of the Morrin School engineering report was discussed. Stephenson Engineering presented information regarding the Morrin School Structural Condition Assessment and Options analysis report.
“The Board of trustees felt physically the state that structure is in, they would need to put it in their Capital Plan submission, and that would be their number one priority in their capital plan submitted to the ministry,” said Superintendent Cam McKeage.
He said the report once finalized will be sent to the board and McKeage says hopefully it will be approved for submission at their next board meeting.
While the division may identify Morrin school on its three-year capital priority plan, it still has to be looked at by the province.
‘We had the engineering firm give it another look to strengthen our case, recognizing the building is in a little bit of disarray,” he said.
He says at this point they can not say if they are looking at a renovation or a rebuild.
“All we are asking for is recognition the building needs some work,” he said. “In our capital plan we are going to ask for the moon, but it is really up to the ministry what they want to do with it.”
According to a 2011 report, the original Morrin School was built in 1950, with expansions and modernizations in 1957, 1978 and 1988.
