Hussar ringette players win silver playing for Strathmore Ice team

This season six girls that were Hussar Fireworks played for Strathmore Ice ringette team. They won the silver medal at the U16B provincial tournament in Westlock March 8-10.
    Mary Sandum, Katelyn Sandum, Kylie Bishop, Grace Gregory, Jordan Holm, and Genesis Marucha joined their Strathmore teammates for some great ringette games.  
    They were 3-0 after round robin play, rewarding them with 1st place in their pool. Saturday evening they won a crossover game versus the host team, Pembina, guaranteeing them a medal game on Sunday. Placing third overall in the tournament had them facing Lacombe in the semifinals for a chance at the gold medal game.
    Sunday the Ice battled the Lethbridge team. A tough game to a 6-10 final, resulting in the silver medal. Great end to a great season that saw two tournament golds, one tournament silver, and the Zone 2 League Banner.


Saints win consolation final at Zones

Junior basketball teams at St. Anthony’s finished their season at Zones.
    The Junior A Boys were at their zone tournament in Rosemary March 1 and 2.
The Saints played Olds in their first game, but fell by 12, putting them on the consolation side of the draw. They played George Freeman School from Strathmore in their second game and won by 8 points. This put them in the consolation final where they played Duchess. The Saints won by 6, earning the trophy.
    “Overall it was a great group of guys and they all improved throughout the year,” said coach Jay Mulgrew.
    The Junior A Girls season also came to an end at Zones. The Saints were in Trochu for the year-end tournament on March 1 and 2. In the first game, they played a very strong Linden team and lost. The team regrouped to play Morrin in their second game. The Saints were able to handle a late rally by the Mustangs and qualified for the consolation final.
    There they met Berry Creek. The Saints were strong and lead the entire game. Berry Creek rallied late and tied the game with just seconds on the clock. Berry Creek scored at the buzzer to take the win.
    The Saints ended the season with a 12-4 overall record and played well. They improved at playing as a team, on defense and executing a game plan.

Junior boys Dynos win league championship

The DVSS Junior Boys basketball team won their league championship.
    The Dynos Hosted Prairie Christian Academy in their league final at home on Wednesday, March 6. The Dynos were undefeated throughout their league season and dominated PCA in the final, winning 73-37.
    This result came after a strong showing at zones. The Junior A Boys were in zones at St. Joseph’s in Brooks on March 1 and 2.
    The Dynos topped Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School in their first game but lost to St. Joseph’s by 5. This put them in the third-place match to play Westmont, but they fell.
    On Tuesday, March 5, they played in their league semi-final versus Three Hills, and were successful, qualifying them for the championship.
    The Junior Girls Dynos also had a strong season and competed in the zone tournament.
    The Junior A Dynos girls basketball team was in Chestermere for the year-end tournament on March 1 and 2. The Dynos lost their first game to St. Joseph’s Collegiate but came back in the second game to top East Lake. In their final game, the Dynos faced Holy Cross Collegiate but lost.
    Coach Elesha Sharpe said the team had a great year even though they were plagued with injuries.
    “All the girls worked hard and made us coaches proud with how they improved and played together as a team,” she said.
